Through the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Loki has emerged as one of Marvel’s most cherished characters ever, with Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal resonating deeply with viewers. Initially a villain, Loki has become a fan favorite within the MCU. Despite not introducing groundbreaking changes for the character, the films have followed an established path for Loki. Over the years, Loki has undergone significant transformations since their debut in the Silver Age, battling Thor. Most recently, Loki’s most intriguing role is found in “Mortal Thor” #1, the latest installment in the ongoing saga of Thor and Loki.
In the follow-up titled “The Mortal Thor,” The Immortal Thor continues its epic saga. Loki, Thor’s brother, played a crucial role in the original series, allying with him against the gods of Utgard and the Roxxon Energy Corporation. However, their friendship proved treacherous as Loki ultimately stabbed Thor in The Immortal Thor #24. The last issue, #25, introduced a new character, Lucky, who appeared to be a different version of Loki, assisting an unconscious young man named Sigurd Jarlson. Lucky resurfaces again in the first issue of “Mortal Thor,” taking on an unusual job as a street con artist – one of many odd jobs Loki has taken on throughout their storied history.
Loki Is a Street Grifter With a Mission
From being born to the Frost Giant Laufey, Loki spent their formative years within the hallowed grounds of Asgard, under the tutelage of Odin alongside Thor. Initially serving as a prince and later embodying the role of the Trickster God, Loki’s life was marked by a complex relationship with their Asgardian family. While they cherished their kinship, an underlying resentment festered due to feelings of being overlooked in comparison to Thor or Baldur. Over time, this animosity fueled Loki’s actions, leading them to cause trouble for Thor and the rest of their family.
After Thor was exiled from Asgard and found himself bonded with human alter ego Donald Blake, Loki followed suit, transitioning into a powerful antagonist on Earth. Here, they wreaked havoc on Thor, the Avengers, and anyone else who stood in their path. During Ragnarok, Loki demonstrated a brief streak of heroism against Surtur.
Throughout history, Loki has seized control of Asgard on numerous occasions, most notably during the 2004 miniseries. Additionally, they have assumed multiple disguises over the years, using each one to further their goals as the God of Mischief. Tragically, along with the rest of Asgard, Loki perished in “Thor Disassembled,” only to be reborn as a woman and continue to torment Thor.
Loki’s transformation into a woman marked the beginning of a significant career shift. Instead of merely causing trouble in Asgard, Loki aligned with Norman Osborn’s Cabal, a group responsible for managing superhuman security under the Superhero Initiative. Loki played a key role in inciting Osborn to attack Asgard, but backed off when the Void threatened its destruction. After returning to their male form, Loki perished during that battle, but this was not Loki’s final act. Loki resurfaced as Kid Loki and played a part in forming a new team of Young Avengers, briefly making Loki an Avenger. Post this, Loki rejoined Asgard, striving to redeem themselves by serving the city and earning the title of a hero despite their past misdeeds against Asgard. Loki even ran for presidency and briefly held the position of Sorcerer Supreme, preparing Doctor Strange for an impending threat. Loki embarked on a mission to collect the Infinity Stones, leading them to the House of Ideas where they became the God of Stories. Loki subsequently teamed up with Thor in combat, eventually slaying him. This act led to Loki becoming Lucky, who is currently guarding Sigurd Jarlson, reborn Thor, for a yet-unknown purpose. Loki killed Thor for a purpose similar to how Lucky watches over Sigurd, using their prowess in riddles and magic to survive on the bustling streets of New York City.
Loki Has Always Been a Multi-Faceted God
Loki, over time especially in the 21st century, has undergone significant transformations. For the most part, Loki has portrayed a villainous role throughout their existence. They’ve been a royal prince, an ally to Thor and his companions, a king of Asgard, essentially a high-ranking official for Norman Osborn, and a covert agent working on behalf of the Mothers of Asgard. They have even held the position of Sorcerer Supreme and campaigned for presidency. After a life filled with troublemaking, Loki shifted towards storytelling, becoming the skald of Asgard and the God of Stories.
Now, they’ve adopted the name Lucky and are carrying on with the same duties they had in “Immortal Thor”, namely watching over Thor. However, there seems to be more to it; Loki appears to be readying Thor for some upcoming event, and their current street hustler persona is a part of this plan. If you’re curious about what’s next for Loki, you might find answers in “Mortal Thor”.
