In the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a rising magical character might pose a challenge to the new main antagonist. After briefly exploring Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror, the MCU has found another formidable adversary in Robert Downey Jr., who is swapping his iconic red and gold Iron Man armor for Doctor Doom’s green robes and armor.

Doctor Doom will appear as the antagonist in the next two _Avengers_ films, titled _Avengers: Doomsday_ and _Avengers: Secret Wars_. In Marvel’s _One World Under Doom_, he has assumed control over the entire world. An accompanying event introduces a new magical user who is now under Doctor Doom’s scrutiny, sparking his curiosity for certain.

G.O.D.S.: One World Doom #1, penned by Ryan North, Francesco Mortarino, Raul Angulo, and Travis Lanham from VC, revolves around the characters Wyn, who embodies The-Powers-That-Be, and his apprentice Mia DiMaria. These characters hail from Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti’s G.O.D.S. The-Powers-That-Be, with a focus on magic, contrast with The-Natural-Order-of-Things, whose interest lies in science. A crucial aspect of G.O.D.S. is Mia’s past recruitment by Wyn’s former wife, Aiko, to The-Natural-Order-of-Things. This recruitment meant Mia could never fully utilize her magic potential. However, a selfless act by Aiko, where she sacrificed her eyesight, enabled Mia to become Wyn’s student instead.

It’s possible you may question the connection here. However, as Mia DiMaria navigates realms of both magic and technology, her journey bears striking resemblance to that of Doctor Doom.

Doctor Doom May Have Found a New Magical Apprentice

In his role as Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom is responsible for shielding the sun from demons who thrive on fiery chaos. However, the protective symbols used to keep these demons at bay are decaying, potentially leading to the sun’s destruction. Consequently, Doctor Doom, along with Wyn and Mia, embarks on a journey to the heart of the sun to mend these symbols. During their time there, Doctor Doom asks Mia to join him in casting spells and even shows her certain hand movements for the incantations.

Mia appears hesitant about her magical prowess, a fact that Doom remarks on. He suggests that her magic is underdeveloped, and when Mia attempts to justify this by mentioning her magic being restricted, Doom dismisses her explanations. Compared to Wyn, Doom exhibits a far more dedicated approach towards mentoring Mia. In contrast, Wyn barely remembers Mia’s name, constantly addressing her as “Apprentice.” Doom encourages Mia to trust in her spellcasting, emphasizing that faith is crucial for magic to be effective.

Doctor Doom assigns Wyn and Mia to hold off the demons while he fixes more sigils. Trusting Mia, she fights fiercely as though her life is on the line. The demons attempt a final spell, causing their protective barrier to fail, putting them at risk of being burned alive by the sun’s flames. Fortunately, Doom has created a device that allows them to survive for three minutes. During this time, they squabble, with Doom choosing to leave immortal Wyn to endure the fire while he and Mia are teleported back to his castle.

Mia pleads with Doctor Doom to rescue Wyn, but he requests she ask him in return for the favor. Although she ponders the proposition, she ultimately refuses because she’s hesitant about being indebted to Doctor Doom. One can understand her decision, as such a debt would potentially give him influence over her. Instead, Mia relies on her own magical abilities to save Wyn. Eventually, they establish their collaboration will be based on partnership, rather than mentor and apprentice.

In the uncertainty of how “One World Under Doom” concludes, it’s clear that the aftermath will entail a selection process for a new Sorcerer Supreme to fill Doctor Doom’s role. Potential contenders could include Storm, Gambit, Scarlet Witch, Nico Minoru, Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, Agatha Harkness, Valeria Richards, Magik, and the Goblin Queen Madelyne Pryor. However, it’s always possible that Mia DiMaria might also put herself forward as a candidate.
