Throughout October, Hulu added a lot of new movies and shows, but also removed some content. While titles like Blade: Trinity, Die Hard, and Edward Scissorhands became available, others, including The Forgiven and American Sicario, were taken down. More content will be leaving Hulu later this month, including a science fiction film with an actor who recently gained fame in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Currently, there are no plans for that movie to be available on another streaming service.
Before Lewis Pullman became known for his role as Bob Reynolds/Sentry/Void in Thunderbolts – a role he’ll be revisiting in the next Avengers: Doomsday film – he starred in a little-seen science fiction romance called Press Play. This movie, about a couple whose love for music defines their relationship, features Pullman as Harrison and Clara Rugaard as Laura. After a tragedy, Laura finds a way to revisit the past through their shared mixtape. Directed by Greg Björkman’s first feature film, Press Play currently has a 67% rating from critics and a 62% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, but it will no longer be available on Hulu after October 16th, and will only be available for rent or purchase.
Why You Should Watch Press Play
Despite coming out in a year filled with popular and well-received sci-fi films like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Avatar: The Way of Water, Press Play didn’t get much attention. However, it has a lot going for it. Reviewers generally praised the film’s original idea, with jimschembri.com noting that it successfully navigates the complexities of time travel to deliver a moving and logical conclusion. Don Shanahan from Every Movie Has a Lesson highlighted how the film cleverly connects time travel with the emotional power of music. The film’s trendy soundtrack also received positive feedback.
The film’s central science fiction and romance story is boosted by strong performances from both Rugaard and Pullman. Brent Simon of AV Club praised the actors’ connection to the story’s themes and to each other, specifically highlighting both Pullman (known from Bad Times At The El Royale) and Rugaard (I Am Mother). Pullman’s performance was particularly noted as being deeply engaging and anchoring the film, and ScreenRant included it in a list of his ten best roles, praising his confident, believable, and emotionally resonant portrayal.
New Movies on Hulu
Hulu has removed some content this October, but it’s also added a bunch of popular movies! You can now stream titles like Barbarian, Hotel Transylvania, Ice Age: Collision Course, Live Free or Die Hard, and all five Twilight Saga films. And there’s more to come next month – 13 Going On 30, Julie & Julia, and Love Actually will all be available starting November 1st.
