An Underrated History Series Starring Mark Hamill Is Now Streaming Free

Remarkable efforts frequently receive less acknowledgement during their initial release, and this is even more prevalent in today’s streaming era, where programs can be prematurely terminated before locating their ideal viewership. However, the good news is that enthusiasts may discover these shows at a later date. Regrettably, it might be too late to save them from being canceled, but at least they will receive the recognition they deserve. Here’s hoping that one of Mark Hamill‘s lesser-known series, now available for free streaming on Tubi, will find its audience and receive the appreciation it deserves.

In Knightfall, which aired between 2017 and 2019 on History, Thomas Hamill portrayed Master Talus, an experienced member of the Knights Templar. This series was a dramatic depiction of the rise and demise of the Knights Templar, encompassing the intricate power struggles and tumultuous events that characterized the order. The show comprised two seasons with 18 episodes in total, but unfortunately, it was terminated in May 2020. It’s possible that the cancellation could be linked to the pandemic affecting production schedules in Hollywood, or perhaps even at optimal times, a scripted drama like Knightfall is a significant risk for History to undertake.

Knightfall” delves into the lives of the Knights Templar in the timeframe just after the Crusades, an era where many are still zealous about reclaiming the ‘Holy Land’ through combat and hunting for religious artifacts of Christian lore. The story intertwines with key historical figures like Pope Boniface VIII (Jim Carter), along with French royals such as King Philip (Ed Stoppard), Queen Joan (Olivia Ross), Princess Isabella (portrayed by Sabrina Bartlett and Genevieve Gaunt), and Prince Louis (Tom Forbes). They all maneuver for power and influence over this turbulent military order.

In Season 2, Hamill’s character, Talus, makes his appearance. He is the commanding brother responsible for training Templar recruits at the Chartres Temple and is a seasoned warrior himself. After spending more than a decade as a captive of war in the Middle East, Talus brings a distinct viewpoint to those around him. Critics have been particularly impressed with Hamill’s acting in this role, praising how he raised the quality of every scene he was part of.

Regrettably, the overall response to this show is quite divided, earning a 55% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics have flagged historical inaccuracies within the storyline, but the producers claim these are allowable under creative freedom. On the other hand, passionate viewers of the series compensate for the criticism with their heartfelt compliments.

You can currently stream “Knightfall” for free on Tubi, though keep in mind that it comes with advertisements. Alternatively, you can choose to digitally rent or buy the series from platforms like Apple TV, YouTube, and FandangoNow.
