Horror movie remakes are constantly being made, with mixed results. While some, like John Carpenter’s version of The Thing from Another World and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, have been huge hits and even surpassed the originals, others haven’t gotten the attention they deserve. One remake from 2005, based on a classic 1950s horror film, was critically disliked and even led to a major legal battle, but it’s now available to watch for free.
Starting November 1st, Tubi users can watch the 2005 horror film House of Wax. This remake of the 1953 movie follows a group of college friends, played by Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Paris Hilton, and Jared Padalecki, who get stranded in a deserted town. There, they encounter a disturbing wax museum and must struggle to survive and avoid becoming the next displays. While critics didn’t love the film, it also faced legal issues—a $7 million lawsuit was filed after a fire on set damaged a studio owned by Village Roadshow Studios and Warner Bros. Movie World Australia.
House of Wax Prioritizes Style Over Substance, and That’s Not a Bad Thing
House of Wax isn’t a movie that tries to be profound. If you’re looking for complex characters or deep meaning, you won’t find it. However, the film excels as a purely frightening experience. While the remake follows a predictable slasher movie formula – with typical characters and a somewhat silly plot – it makes up for it with strong visuals, sound design, and overall atmosphere.
While the recent House of Wax remake received significantly lower ratings than the original – 27% from critics and 44% from audiences compared to the original’s 93% and 73% – it successfully builds a genuinely creepy and captivating world. From the fictional town of Ambrose to the incredibly detailed wax figures and the memorable melting house climax, the film creates a strong atmosphere. It doesn’t shy away from graphic violence either, featuring brutal and iconic death scenes, like the one involving Hilton’s character, that viewers still remember after twenty years. This has helped House of Wax develop a dedicated cult following and currently makes it a popular title on Tubi, where it ranks among the top 10 most-watched movies.
Other Horror Movies Now on Tubi
Even though Halloween has passed, Tubi is continuing to add scary movies to its selection. You can now stream titles like House of Wax, Black Christmas, both versions of Carrie (1976 and 2013), the original Child’s Play, Misery, and Terrifier 3. They’ve also added the 2003 remake of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, based on the 1974 film.
