Recently, they added a 2008 dystopian action movie that offers a fresh take on a 1975 classic.
Let’s discuss Death Race, Paul W.S. Anderson’s updated version of the 1975 film Death Race 2000. The original is a beloved cult classic from the ’70s, known for its campy style, low budget, satirical take on a dark future, and excessive violence. However, the remake is a surprisingly good film that doesn’t get enough credit. It’s set in a grim future and stars Jason Statham as Jensen Ames, a wrongly convicted man who’s forced by a scheming prison warden to compete in a deadly, televised race of armored cars for a chance at freedom.
Jason Statham’s Death Race Remake Is a High-Octane Guilty Pleasure
Look, let’s be honest: Anderson’s Death Race remake doesn’t hold a candle to the original 1975 film. It just didn’t capture that same fun, cult-classic vibe, and critics definitely noticed – the original boasts an 80% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the remake landed at a disappointing 41%. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a total wash. I actually found Death Race to be a really fun, high-octane action movie. It’s not going to win any awards for depth, but if you’re looking for something to just switch off and enjoy, this delivers!
If you’re looking for a wildly over-the-top and violent action movie, Death Race definitely fits the bill. Many viewers compare it to a more intense version of Mario Kart or Mad Max, thanks to its constant, high-speed, and brutal car battles. The film focuses on delivering explosive entertainment rather than a complex story, creating chaotic and thrilling scenes of armored vehicles fighting with weapons like guns, oil slicks, and napalm. It’s also a great movie for Jason Statham, who plays a tough and determined hero forced to compete in a dangerous, futuristic prison race. While it’s not a perfect remake of the original, Death Race is a high-energy, no-nonsense action film that delivers exactly what you expect: lots of stylized violence, powerful cars, and a strong performance from Statham.
