An Underrated Sci-Fi Movie Just Hit Hulu (And It’s Better Than You Remember)

Hulu added a bunch of new movies in November, including a surprisingly scary sci-fi horror film that will definitely make you think twice about space. Sci-fi is always popular because it combines imagination with what could be possible, often tackling big ideas. While many sci-fi movies are blockbusters, some hidden gems deserve attention. Hulu’s already impressive collection—featuring classics like Aliens, Signs, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy—just got a little better with this under-the-radar sci-fi flick you won’t want to miss.

I’m really excited that Apollo 18 is now on Hulu! It’s a super creepy sci-fi horror movie that takes this cancelled Apollo mission to the moon and imagines what really happened. The filmmakers present it like it’s actual found footage from the mission, which is a really cool and unsettling effect. It got so much attention, NASA even had to publicly state that it’s not a documentary – which just proves how convincing it is! It’s directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego and written by Brian Miller, and I highly recommend checking it out if you’re into that kind of thing.

Apollo 18 Is a Criminally Slept-On Film – And It’s Better Than Critics Say

The movie Apollo 18 has largely faded from memory. While it made a profit – earning over $26 million worldwide on a $5 million budget – it wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences. It received a very low 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, nearly the same as its audience rating. However, don’t let those negative reviews stop you from giving Apollo 18 a try.

I truly believe this movie is a hidden sci-fi masterpiece. It doesn’t rely on jump scares, but instead builds a really unsettling atmosphere and tension that just keeps growing. What really got to me was how the filmmakers used the small spaces inside the lunar module, contrasted with the huge emptiness of the moon itself. It made me feel incredibly vulnerable and alone, like I was right there with the astronauts. And the way it’s filmed – like actual old NASA recordings – is brilliant. It looks so authentic, like you’re watching lost footage from a real disaster, which makes the whole experience even more terrifying.

I really think Apollo 18 got lost in the shuffle. It came out around the time everyone was making found footage movies like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield, and those films just blew it out of the water. Plus, it didn’t get great reviews or really catch on with audiences, which meant it unfortunately faded into obscurity. It’s a shame, because I think it deserved a better chance.

What’s New on Hulu?

Hulu is adding a lot of exciting movies this November, including some science fiction titles. Subscribers can now stream films like Apollo 18 and Skyline, and Osiris (from 2025) will be available starting November 15th. Beyond sci-fi, new additions currently streaming include the classics Love Actually and Labyrinth, as well as the 2018 version of A Star Is Born.
