Superhero movies are incredibly popular, and have been for decades. From the iconic Superman films starring Christopher Reeve to the innovative animation of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, audiences love these larger-than-life stories and amazing visual effects. While the Marvel and DC universes dominate today, streaming service Peacock is highlighting a hidden gem of a superhero film – and the good news is, the sequel is available there too!
The animated movie Megamind, from DreamWorks Animation, is now available to stream on Peacock. Starring Will Ferrell, the film follows a supervillain who unexpectedly defeats his greatest enemy and then has to become the hero himself. It arrived on the streaming service on March 1st, along with its sequel, Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate, and the Megamind Rules spin-off series. The movie, which critics generally liked (giving it a 73% rating), tells the story of a brilliant but clumsy alien villain who finds himself needing to protect the city when the hero he creates turns to evil.
Megamind Is the Superhero Movie We Didn’t Know We Needed
Megamind isn’t a standard superhero film. It cleverly flips the superhero formula, actually feeling more like recent shows such as The Boys or Invincible than movies from its own time. Instead of focusing on the hero, the movie tells the story from the villain’s perspective, showing his path to becoming a better person. It also presents a surprising twist: the supposed hero is portrayed as self-absorbed and unlikeable, while the villain, Tighten, turns out to be the true antagonist.
Megamind isn’t just an action movie; it’s a thoughtful story about finding yourself, accepting fate, and recognizing that morality isn’t always simple. It constantly surprises you by turning superhero conventions on their head – like when the villain initially succeeds, or when the character typically needing rescue takes charge. Beyond its genre twists, it’s simply a well-made film. The movie boasts impressive animation, as you’d expect from DreamWorks, and expertly mixes thrilling action sequences with plenty of humor that appeals to all ages. It’s a film that remains enjoyable even after multiple viewings.
What’s New on Peacock?
Planning a movie night? Peacock has plenty of options! They’ve added a bunch of great films in March, like Argo, Burn After Reading, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Friday the 13th, John Wick: Chapter 4, the Madagascar series, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Keep an eye out for Fast X arriving on March 15th, and Wicked: For Good making its streaming debut on March 20th.
