Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film Jaws didn’t just kick off the trend of big summer movies; it also inspired a surge of films featuring dangerous creatures. This led to a wave of animal-attack movies trying to replicate Jaws’ success – a trend nicknamed “Jawsploitation.” But one particularly wild movie from the 1990s, intended as a Jaws alternative, stands out and is soon leaving Netflix.
Luis Llosa’s Anaconda is definitely one of the sillier monster movies to come out after Jaws. It’s basically a Jawsstyle story, but set in the jungle. The ’90s film features Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Hyde, and Owen Wilson as a documentary crew who team up with John Voight’s character, a snake hunter, to track down a massive, legendary green anaconda. Anaconda* has been available on Netflix for some time, but it will be leaving the platform on February 1st.
Anaconda Is the Wild, Campy Monster Movie That Keeps Slithering to Success
The movie Anaconda wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences initially – it has a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and only 24% from viewers. However, everything people disliked, like the exaggerated acting and silly plot, actually became part of its appeal. While it tried to capture the excitement of animal-attack thrillers like Jaws, Anaconda went in a completely different direction. Instead of building suspense, it embraced how ridiculous the idea of a giant snake attacking a film crew was. This ultimately made it a uniquely enjoyable, and now beloved, “so-bad-it’s-good” cult classic from the 90s.
This movie strikes a perfect balance between scary thrills and delightfully cheesy monster-movie fun. Everything about it is over-the-top – from Jon Voight’s wild performance to the chaotic plot and even the snake itself, which seems to know exactly when to make its big moments. It’s wonderfully unhinged, and that’s what makes it so great! Anaconda has become a cult favorite because of the very things critics originally disliked, and it’s proven to be a huge success.
Even though critics heavily disliked the movie Anaconda, it was a financial success, earning over $136 million globally on a $45 million budget. This success led to a long-running franchise that continues today, with the latest film from 2025 – a self-aware reboot starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd – taking in $128 million worldwide.
Where to Stream Anaconda After It Leaves Netflix?
If you enjoy monster movies, now’s the time to watch Anaconda on Netflix. It’s currently the only major streaming service offering the popular ’90s film, and it doesn’t look like it will be added to any other platforms anytime soon. After February 1st, it might not be available to stream at all for a while.
