Sadie Sink is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and most fans believe she’ll be playing Jean Grey from the X-Men. While the latest trailer revealed less of her character than earlier leaked footage—likely because Sony was hesitant to share everything—this movie seems like the ideal moment to begin setting up the MCU’s next big storyline, focusing on mutants. The trailer did feature scenes showcasing psychic abilities, hinting at her role and the direction of the saga.
So, while we might have figured out who Jean Grey is in this movie, it naturally leads to the question of why. Actress Hailee Steinfeld is credited prominently, confirming her character plays a significant role in the story – she’s just as important to the plot as Spider-Man’s own powers. Luckily, we have a theory connecting this to the bigger picture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it involves a little-known reference to X-Men history.
Mutants Are Already Part of the MCU

Mutants are now officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting in 2022. This isn’t just due to the multiverse; characters like Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Namor have been confirmed as mutants. The She-Hulk series also introduced various superpowered individuals, some of whom are mutants in the original comics. Furthermore, Wonder Man hinted that Simon Williams is also a mutant. While the full “Mutant Saga” hasn’t begun yet, mutants are clearly established within the main MCU timeline.
The Marvel shows Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and the upcoming Wonder Man all include the same government agency, Damage Control, which keeps an eye on people with superpowers. The MCU has shown that enhanced individuals are often viewed with suspicion – we saw this with the Sokovia Accords – and even though those agreements are no longer in effect, the desire to protect the public remains. With mutants now appearing and more people developing powers, Damage Control will likely be at the center of the resulting challenges.
The story is starting to incorporate familiar elements from the X-Men universe. Damage Control, an organization that hunts down people with superpowers, is actively tracking and imprisoning them in high-security facilities. They’re using advanced technology from Stark Industries – essentially, mobile versions of the Sentinel robots – and are close to developing devices that can suppress powers, thanks to technology from Bruce Banner. Even more troubling, the recent finale of Wonder Man showed that Damage Control doesn’t just capture superpowered individuals; they’re also actively recruiting them to work for them.
Rachel Grey Shows What Can Be Done With a Telepath

The X-Men comics frequently feature robots that hunt mutants, collars used to suppress their powers, and mutants being treated as strategic resources. These elements are especially prominent in the storyline “Days of Future Past,” which depicts a bleak future where a war between mutants and Sentinels has devastated the world. A central figure in this future is Rachel Grey, the daughter of Cyclops and Phoenix. She’s a remarkably powerful telepath and telekinetic, inheriting the Phoenix Force, and was the first mutant officially classified as an Omega-level mutant – meaning her abilities have no known limits.
In the “Days of Future Past” storyline, Rachel was captured and manipulated by those who hunted mutants. They exploited her telepathic powers to track down other mutants, turning her into something called a “Hound.” Though she eventually regained control, the experience of betraying her fellow mutants deeply affected her. Interestingly, some designs of Rachel Grey bear a resemblance to brief appearances of Sadie Sink’s character in Brand New Day, leading some viewers to believe Sink might be portraying Rachel, rather than Jean Grey.
Is Sadie Sink a “Hound” For Damage Control?
Rachel is a great character, but she’s a bit obscure for a franchise that hasn’t even established its own version of Professor X yet. However, her backstory could easily connect with the MCU’s Jean Grey. The trailer for Brand New Day suggests a breakout from Damage Control, which might explain the number of villains in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy’s Jean Grey could be one of those escapees, fleeing from Damage Control.
This makes us wonder if there’s a connection between Sink’s character and Rachel. It’s possible her character was forced to work for Damage Control, using her psychic abilities to find other mutants and metahumans. If so, Damage Control would see her as incredibly valuable and would stop at nothing to recapture her. Because of her past, she’d likely be drawn to other powered individuals like Spider-Man, naturally using her abilities to understand them. The trailer showed her already knowing Spider-Man’s secret identity, which could easily be explained by a quick psychic reading.
This is just a theory, but it fits nicely with everything that’s happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and smoothly continues the overall story. It also suggests a possible role for Jean Grey as the MCU’s equivalent of Cerebro, the X-Men’s mutant-finding technology. She could use her powers to locate and unite mutants for the X-Men. Introducing such a key character before fully diving into the X-Men makes sense, and it seems like that’s exactly what Marvel is doing.
