Despite a disappointing performance in cinemas, Ana de Armas‘s replacement in the film is now finding success as a streaming hit on two different platforms, proving that a movie’s theatrical run doesn’t determine its ultimate fate.
The new movie Ballerina, a spin-off of John Wick, is proving to be popular with viewers. According to FlixPatrol, it’s currently the most-streamed movie in the U.S. on HBO Max. It’s also doing well internationally, ranking as the eighth most-streamed movie worldwide on Prime Video, which is a great result after its release in theaters.
Ballerina Was a Box Office Disappointment
Although Ballerina received mostly positive reviews – earning a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it didn’t perform well in theaters. While critics generally liked the film, it wasn’t as successful as Keanu Reeves’s other movies.
Despite having many things going for it, the movie Ballerina only earned $131 million worldwide. Although its budget was around $90 million, it didn’t make enough to cover its costs after marketing. Ballerina was considered a box office failure, but its recent popularity on streaming platforms has been a positive development.
Will There Ever Be a Ballerina 2?
A year after it came out, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina has finally found some success, gaining an audience on streaming services. While it wasn’t a big hit in theaters, the film did resonate with viewers online. However, a sequel doesn’t seem probable, despite the movie ending with a cliffhanger that sets up future possibilities for Ana de Armas’s character, Eve Macarro. It’s unlikely we’ll see that story continued, though there’s still a small chance Eve could return in a future installment.
However, the world of John Wick is continuing to expand. An animated prequel is being created to show John Wick’s early, challenging missions before the first film. Plus, several spin-off stories are planned after the Ballerina movie, focusing on characters like Caine, played by Donnie Yen.
Despite the disappointing box office numbers for Ballerina, the John Wick franchise isn’t over. With the film now doing well on streaming, the future of this action universe looks promising.
