Andor S2 Reveals Star Wars’ Catchy Pop Music Hits

In episode 3 of ‘Andor’ Season 2, titled “Harvest”, we witness an energetic dance party on the prosperous planet Chandrila. Characters synchronize their moves and sing to the rhythm, indicating that there is galactic pop music within the Star Wars universe. What makes this even more exciting is that the song subtly references ‘Andor’ Season 1. The crowd keeps chanting “Niamos”, which was the name of the planet Cassian Andor first visited in season 1, episode 7. This seemingly insignificant detail helps to make the universe feel more genuine and lived-in.

At a wedding on Chandrila, we join in as friends and relatives of the couple dance with joyous abandon. It appears they have a semi-structured dance routine committed to memory, and at certain moments, they lift their hands high and exclaim, “Niamos!” This simple act adds a touch of familiarity to the people of Star Wars, demonstrating that, much like us, they can connect through shared music, with their celebratory tunes echoing popular holiday destinations.

Fans might remember Niamos as a picturesque tropical planet, adored by vacationers and the affluent. As New York Times film critic Siddhant Adklakha noted on X, this is “similar to shouting ‘MIAMI’ in the middle of a pop tune” within the context of Star Wars. It’s a common, earthly element that seems remarkably alien in the Star Wars universe. Yet, it hints at the universality of certain aspects of human life.

In the second-to-last episode of Season 1, Cassian made his way back to the planet Niamos, yet it has not been shown since then. While Niamos was featured in the series Andor, it had also been mentioned briefly in other media last year – specifically, in the comic book Jango Fett 3 and the video game Star Wars Outlaws. With this song gaining popularity, there’s a chance we might see more of Niamos in the future; however, keeping it as it is might be more appealing.

Many people joked about the self-referential tune, saying they thought the “Cantina Song” was the only melody heard in a distant galaxy up until now. This new song has certainly kicked off Andor Season 2 well, but there’s much more to come. The series will release three additional episodes on Tuesday, April 29th.
