Diego Luna, known for his role in *Kiss of the Spider Woman*, has pointed out an unexpected connection between his two most recent characters. Although they appear quite different, he sees a surprising similarity in playing them.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Diego Luna discussed the similarities between his characters Cassian Andor in *Star Wars* and Valentin Arregui/Armando in *Kiss of the Spider Woman*. He explained that both characters go through significant personal journeys. When we first meet Valentin, he’s deeply isolated and struggling. Imprisoned and feeling defeated, he’s shut himself off from any hope of change or revolution as a way to protect himself and cope with his emotional wounds.
As Luna explained, that’s essentially where we meet Cassian in the first season of *Andor*. But the show has a powerful message, especially relevant now: it’s a simple reminder to stay connected to each other. In difficult times, it’s important to avoid isolation, because connection is what allows us to love.
Diego Luna first played Cassian Andor in the 2016 film *Rogue One: A Star Wars Story*. The first season of *Andor* followed his journey to find his missing sister, all while being chased by dangerous enemies. Throughout the series, Andor is captured, escapes, and transforms from someone doubtful of the Rebellion’s cause into a key leader. Both *Rogue One* and *Andor* received widespread praise from critics and viewers alike.
What Is Kiss of the Spider Woman All About?
Bill Condon wrote and directed *Kiss of the Spider Woman*, which is the second movie adapted from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. It’s also the first adaptation to include elements from the 1992 stage musical by Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb. The film features Luna as Valentin, a political prisoner who becomes cellmates with Luis Molina, played by Tonatiuh. While Luis tells stories about his beloved Hollywood musicals, the two men develop a surprising connection despite their difficult situation.
Ingrid Luna, Tonatiuh, Josefina Scaglione, Tony Dovolani, and Bruno Bichir star in *Kiss of the Spider Woman*, which premiered in theaters on October 10th. The film has been well-received by both critics and audiences, currently holding a 76% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on almost 100 reviews, and a 68% audience score on Popcornmeter.
Kiss of the Spider Woman is in theaters now.
