Andre is an Idiot – REVIEW

Andre is an idiot? really?

Many names come to mind when thinking of documentary subjects: Harry, Keir, Megan, and others. This film focuses on Andre Ricciardi, a San Francisco advertising executive known for his carefree and somewhat reckless approach to life. He impulsively married his wife when she needed a visa, and they have children he adores, who are very close to him. His advertising work is uniquely creative, and he’s lived a pleasure-seeking life. However, everything changes when a routine colonoscopy reveals he has stage 4 cancer. He had previously declined the test a year earlier, and his mother’s blunt reaction to the diagnosis is, ‘What a fing idiot!’

Andre is an idiot…but he’s very funny!

The documentary chronicles his treatment journey with his signature wit and humor. A born performer, he approaches both life and his medical challenges in a captivating, though sometimes unsettling, way. Determined to raise awareness, he enlists his old advertising friends to create a uniquely quirky campaign, featuring images of everyday objects resembling… well, you get the idea (like the center of an orange or the opening of a wet wipes container, and yes, they jokingly suggested even Brooklyn Beckham!). The film shows his creative outlets – a website called Death Yells, funny stop-motion animations about chemo – and even his fleeting consideration of a radical solution: a head transplant from an Italian doctor!

In memorium

Andre uses humor to cope, but as the documentary goes on and his health rapidly declines due to failing liver and kidneys, the gravity of his situation becomes clear. While stories about facing death aren’t new, Andre is such a unique and likable person that it’s hard not to feel deeply connected to his struggle.
