Andrew Garfield Gives Update on Whether The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Will Ever Happen

Sony’s *The Amazing Spider-Man* films are often a point of debate among fans of the web-slinger. Though some choices made in the movies were controversial, many people still fondly remember the series, especially Andrew Garfield’s performance as Peter Parker. His popular portrayal gained even more appreciation after he appeared in *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, leading to a strong fan movement hoping he’ll reprise the role and finish his planned trilogy.

Andrew Garfield recently addressed the ongoing rumors about *The Amazing Spider-Man 3* during a fan Q&A with *GQ*. Sadly for fans hoping to see him reprise the role, he confirmed that a third film isn’t happening and doesn’t expect it ever will. He acknowledged the fans’ desire for it, saying, “It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen.”

Andrew Garfield Is Right, Amazing Spider-Man 3 Is Unlikely

As a moviegoer, I remember the initial buzz around Sony’s *The Amazing Spider-Man* films. The first one in 2012 did really well, pulling in over $757 million worldwide. But things took a turn with the sequel in 2014, *The Amazing Spider-Man 2*. While still making a good amount – around $709 million globally – it didn’t quite hit the same heights, and critics were lukewarm. That drop in performance, combined with the mixed reviews, pretty much signaled the end of that Spider-Man run. Sony ultimately decided to team up with Marvel Studios and bring a fresh take on the character into the MCU, which, looking back, was probably the right call.

The collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios was extremely profitable. Films starring Tom Holland as Spider-Man significantly boosted box office numbers, with *Spider-Man: Homecoming* earning over $880 million and *Spider-Man: Far From Home* becoming the first Spider-Man movie to earn over $1 billion. This success peaked with *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, which grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide, establishing the MCU version of Spider-Man as a major box office draw. However, Sony’s separate Spider-Man universe, including films like *Morbius* and *Madame Web*, hasn’t performed well with audiences or critics, making a return to the less successful *Amazing Spider-Man* series a considerable financial gamble.

Sony and Marvel are developing several different Spider-Man projects. The animated *Spider-Verse* movies have been hugely popular and profitable, earning over a billion dollars and with a third film planned to finish the story. This success led to a live-action *Spider-Noir* series starring Nicolas Cage, coming in 2026. Marvel is also creating the animated series *Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man*, set in a different version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because so much effort and resources are going into these other Spider-Man projects, it’s unlikely Andrew Garfield will reprise his role anytime soon.
