A well-known actor who has played Spider-Man in movies is excited about the possibility of another Marvel character being adapted for live-action.
Andrew Garfield recently told Hits Radio he’d be open to seeing Emma Stone play Gwen Stacy in a live-action Spider-Man movie. He jokingly suggested it could be directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the director of several films they’ve both appeared in, like Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. Garfield went on to praise Stone’s talent, saying he believes she’s capable of anything as an actress.
Man, it feels like ages ago when Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were last in a Marvel movie together – it was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and that heartbreaking scene where Gwen Stacy… well, you know. Then, Andrew surprised everyone by showing up in Spider-Man: No Way Home with Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire! Seeing those three Spider-Men together was insane, and the movie absolutely crushed the box office – it made almost $2 billion and became the biggest hit of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. It was a total cinematic event!
Why A Spider-Gwen Movie Is More Likely To Happen Than Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man 3
Ever since 2021, fans have hoped to see a third Amazing Spider-Man movie starring Garfield. However, Sony hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to revive that franchise. Interestingly, there’s a much better chance of seeing Stone play Spider-Gwen in a live-action film, based on Sony’s recent plans for its Spider-Man universe.
Sony is restarting its Spider-Man Universe after several recent movies didn’t perform well at the box office. Instead of focusing on Spider-Man himself, they’re now making films about villains or lesser-known characters. They seem to be taking inspiration from the popular animated Spider-Verse films, and there’s hope that Hailee Steinfeld will finally get to play an alternate version of Gwen Stacy as a Spider-hero.
Now that Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Woman is planned to get her own animated spin-off, bringing Emma Stone back as Spider-Woman in a live-action role would be a smart move. It would not only utilize a popular actress from Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man films, but also give her a chance to fully develop as a Marvel hero. This would also help Sony avoid the issues with their previous Spider-Man Universe and concentrate on key Spider-Man characters who are just as important as Peter Parker.
Sony is currently working on releasing Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July and has Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse planned for June 2027. Once Marvel Studios wraps up its multiverse storylines, it might be a good time for Sony to consider making a live-action Spider-Gwen movie.
Casting Emma Stone as Spider-Gwen opens up possibilities for bringing Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man into a Spider-Verse storyline – maybe by having him visit her universe where her Peter Parker passed away. This feels like a more achievable path forward than trying to make The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and it would likely be easier to integrate into Sony’s plans for a fresh start with their Spider-Man Universe.
You can now find The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Garfield and Stone, on Blu-ray/DVD and through various streaming services.
