Sony’s Spider-Man related movies, like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven, have faced a lot of criticism. Both movie critics and comic book fans have been puzzled by Sony’s efforts to create a Spider-Man universe separate from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Spider-Man character.
I’m really excited for the Spider-Noir series coming to Prime Video in May, and it’s got me thinking about where Sony’s Spider-Man universe is headed. It seems like Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the folks behind it, might be hinting at a cool new strategy. Instead of just making movies about Spider-Man’s enemies, Sony could have even bigger success by creating live-action spin-offs based on characters from the Spider-Verse. Honestly, that sounds amazing to me!
Andrew Garfield Would Love a ‘Spider-Verse’ Movie Starring Emma Stone

While chatting with Hits Radio’s Olivia Marks, actor Andrew Garfield was asked about the possibility of his Amazing Spider-Man costar, Emma Stone, playing Spider-Gwen in a future movie. Here’s what Garfield said in response:
Honestly, it seems like a perfect fit, especially with Yorgos Lanthimos directing. She’s an exceptionally talented actor and I believe she’s capable of pulling off any role.
Yorgos Lanthimos and Robbie Ryan have collaborated on many critically acclaimed projects. These include the films The Favourite, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Bleat, as well as the film Bugonia.
While it might seem unusual to consider Yorgos Lanthimos for a big superhero film, it’s been surprisingly long – over a decade – since Emma Stone last played Spider-Woman in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Although her character died in that film, Spider-Gwen is still active in the Spider-Verse movies, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld. Since Steinfeld is already playing Kate Bishop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Emma Stone would be a perfect fit to reprise the role in a live-action movie. With the MCU increasingly exploring the multiverse and bringing back Spider-Man actors like Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire – possibly for future Avengers films – there’s a clear opportunity for Emma Stone to return as a Spider-Woman variant.
Similar to how Spider-Man: No Way Home continued the story of The Amazing Spider-Man films featuring Andrew Garfield, a Spider-Gwen movie could do the same. After Garfield reprised his role as Spider-Man, fans eagerly asked for another film in that series. A Spider-Gwen spin-off would be a great way to explore her story further. As shown in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Gwen Stacy experienced a parallel journey to Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, including battling the Lizard and tragically losing a close friend.
‘Spider-Verse’ Synergy

Sony hasn’t been able to make Spider-Man movies on their own because they partnered with Marvel Studios for the character’s films. However, Sony can create spin-off movies focusing on other characters from the Spider-Man universe. A film starring Spider-Gwen, and potentially featuring Emma Stone, seems like a logical next move. In fact, animated movies about Spider-Woman and Spider-Punk are reportedly already being developed.
Spider-Gwen’s Cultural Impact
A Spider-Gwen movie offers more than just fitting into Sony’s existing Spider-Man universe; it has the potential to be a culturally significant film featuring a strong female superhero. Because audiences already know and like the character – drawn to her unique, punk-inspired take on the Spider-Person role – she’s a better choice than some of the other villains Sony has considered. Gwen’s different personality and story compared to Peter Parker would allow her to establish her own distinct franchise, separate from the Tom Holland Spider-Man films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like Wonder Woman’s success in 2017, a Spider-Gwen movie, with the right creative approach, could really connect with audiences.
Given Sony’s difficulties building a cohesive shared universe, capitalizing on the established ‘Spider-Verse’ is a smart move. With the multiverse now a key part of both animated and live-action Marvel films, a series led by Emma Stone as Spider-Gwen feels natural. While Andrew Garfield’s suggestion of a Spider-Gwen film starring Stone might have been casual, the idea clearly has potential. If Sony expands its Spider-Verse beyond animation, it could be a major success. However, it currently seems more likely that the planned spin-off featuring Bad Bunny as El Muerto will be revisited before Spider-Gwen gets her live-action debut.
