Andrew Scott has shut down the possibility of a potential second season of Ripley on Netflix.
This new eight-episode series on Netflix, released last year, is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley. It tells the story of the main character as he gets involved in a web of lies, scams, and murder while living in Italy in the 1960s.
Steven Zaillian, the creator of The Night Of, is behind this new show, which features Johnny Flynn (known for his roles in Beast and Emma) as Dickie, and Dakota Fanning (from The Alienist) as Marge Sherwood.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Scott indicated that Netflix has likely cancelled the show.
“No, that’s not going to happen now,” he said when asked whether there’d be a second season.
Now that there are five books in Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley series, many fans are wondering if actor Andrew Scott might reprise his role in a new television adaptation.
Zaillian has mentioned he’d be open to continuing Ripley’s story if audiences showed interest, as he told The Wrap.
He mentioned that making more installments is definitely an option. Because they own the rights to the source material, it’s possible. He added that he’d like some time off first, but believes the character is strong enough to support further development.
Ripley wasn’t a massive hit when it debuted on Netflix last year, but it still attracted a good number of viewers. In its first week, people watched a total of 16.9 million hours of the series, and that number increased to 18.4 million hours in its second week.
The show’s ending hinted at a possible continuation, with Ripley’s lies exposed to an enemy. But, based on recent statements from the creator, it now seems a second season won’t happen.
