As a die-hard fan of animated comedy, I must confess that even I, Andy Samberg, have been left slightly taken aback by some scenes in our groundbreaking show, ‘Digman.’ Airing in 2023, this adult cartoon has made waves with its bold mix of explicit humor, sexually charged references, and graphic violence. Yet, within these bounds set by Comedy Central, we’ve had to draw the line occasionally.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Neil Campbell and I revealed that one specific scene from our first season was deemed overly graphic by us creators and required tweaking before it hit the small screen. We believe in pushing boundaries, but even for us, there’s a limit!
When questioned if any material had been left out from the program, the duo promptly mentioned that such occurrences are uncommon. Samberg responded: “Was there anything we believed was beyond our capabilities? That’s one reason why we created Digman, so as to prevent ourselves from ever being in a position like that.
The Digman Moment That Had to Be Toned Down
Admittedly, both of us recognized that the scene where Rip Digman delivers a lethal punch to a baby was a delicate dance with the animators to perfect. As for me, I’d say Season 1 undeniably included this controversial act, which is understandable given its context. Let’s just say, there were certain elements towards the end that we contemplated, thinking, ‘Perhaps we could push these boundaries a bit.’
The story in focus centers around an antagonist who, after coming into contact with a magical spring known as the Fountain of Youth, transforms into a defenseless baby. In this vulnerable state, the character Rip Digman exploits the situation to end the man’s life. As Samberg puts it, “We keep returning to this topic because we enjoy it so much.” However, upon revisiting the scene where the baby is violently killed, they initially found it to be incredibly inappropriate and felt they should have been more explicit about it.
In essence, the scenario was humorously depicted as if he possessed the Fountain of Youth within him, which justified our joke. However, upon seeing it, it proved to be quite distressing. When we initially viewed it with the creators, their laughter was almost uncontrollable, but we felt it went too far. The creators agreed and admitted they had overstepped the mark. This is one of the rare instances where we collectively decided that the humor had crossed a line.
In Campbell’s opinion, there were excessive amounts of bloody spurts which led the animators to produce a more tranquil variation, suitable for viewing and less graphically intense. The final version that audiences watched contained less graphic violence and subtly avoided showing the impact of each strike on the baby.
The main character, Rip Digman, played by Samberg, headlines the Digman cast. Mitra Jouhari, Tim Robinson, Guz Khan, Dale Soules, and Tim Meadows make up the supporting cast. Additionally, Melissa Fumero, who previously worked on Brooklyn Nine-Nine with Samberg, is part of the ensemble, taking on the role of Rip Digman’s wife that comes back to life thanks to the Holy Grail.
The TV show “Digman” has just come back on our screens, as Comedy Central decided to extend it for another season. Interestingly, the decision for Season 2 was made even before the final episode of the first season aired, showing great confidence in the series. At the moment, you can catch the show every Wednesday night, with episodes following those of the latest season of “South Park.
