Anime Slumps at The Box Office in Japan to Close Out 2025

I have to say, 2025 was an incredible year for anime – possibly the biggest ever. At the movie theaters, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle really took the crown, becoming the highest-grossing anime film of all time. Other movies like Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc and Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution also did really well. But recently, things shifted – new releases came out and caused even these big anime hits to drop down in the rankings.

Currently, the most popular anime movie in Japan is Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution. While it was fourth place last weekend, it fell to seventh place in its fourth week of release. Close behind at number eight is Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which has impressively remained in the top ten since its release in July. Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc dropped from fifth to tenth place. Despite these slightly lower numbers, anime fans shouldn’t worry – it’s normal to see totals decrease towards the end of the year in Japan.

This past weekend, a documentary about the band Ms. Green Apple unexpectedly topped the box office charts with MGA Magical 10 Years Documentary Film -The Origin. Showing just how popular the band is, footage of their concert, MGA Magical 10 Years Anniversary Live -Fjord- On Screen, landed at number three. Live-action movies Glorious Back Home, Tokyo Taxi, and Night Flower* completed the top five, surpassing several popular anime films.

Worry Not, Anime Fans

I’ve been watching the anime scene in Japan, and while things seem to be slowing down towards the end of 2025, I don’t think there’s much to worry about. It’s incredible that Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is still doing well in theaters almost six months after it came out! Even Chainsaw Man‘s story arc with Reze managed to stay popular for a good while. Now, Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution is hitting North American theaters this week, and it’s mostly a compilation of footage from the TV series, focusing on the Shibuya Incident and introducing the Culling Game. It’ll be interesting to see how audiences here respond to it.

Don’t expect to see new movies featuring Denji or Tanjiro next year, but there’s still a lot of anime coming to theaters! Several popular franchises, including Gundam, Gintama, Madoka Magica, Assassination Classroom, and Detective Conan, all have films in the works.
