As a huge anime fan, I’ve been consistently blown away by MAPPA’s work with supernatural and monster-filled series! They absolutely nailed the animation for shows like Jujutsu Kaisen, Hell’s Paradise, Attack on Titan, and Chainsaw Man – those creatures are seriously unforgettable. But they don’t just do those big titles; they’re constantly delivering awesome monster designs. And with spooky season here, they just dropped a trailer for a new film that looks both terrifying and hilarious – I can’t wait to see it!
Unlike most zombie stories, Zombie Land Saga isn’t about surviving an apocalypse—it’s a funny story that uses zombies. The anime started as an original series before a manga was made, and it centers on Sakura Minamoto, a student who wants to be a famous idol. Sadly, she dies in an accident, but a bit of dark magic brings her back to life… as a zombie! Along with other girls resurrected from different eras, Sakura works to achieve her dream, and Zombie Land Saga blends scary concepts with a lot of humor.
The first film in the Zombie Land Saga series, titled Zombie Land Saga: Yumeginga Paradise, will premiere in Japan on October 24th, offering a brand new story. MAPPA, the animation studio behind the series, is returning for this project. While a release date for North America hasn’t been announced yet, fans can likely expect the horror-comedy to become available in Western regions eventually. It’s currently unknown if the film will be released in theaters, through streaming services, or both.
Zombies And Anime: A Match Made in Heaven

While Zombie Land Saga is a popular zombie anime, it’s not the only one. Surprisingly, there aren’t many zombie-themed anime series overall. Some, like Zom 100: Bucket List of The Dead and Highschool of The Dead, blend scary moments with comedy. Others, such as Kabaneri of The Iron Fortress, are straight-up horror and feature zombies as compelling villains.
If you’re hoping for a truly terrifying zombie experience, Zombie Land Saga might not be it, though it does show zombies as the flesh-eating creatures they are sometimes portrayed as. I’ve been catching up on the two seasons of the MAPPA anime in preparation for the movie, and thankfully, they’re both available on Crunchyroll. With only twelve episodes per season, it’s pretty easy to binge-watch everything before Yumeginga Paradise comes to theaters here in North America.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this new zombie story! Share your opinion in the comments and discuss it with other fans in the ComicBook Forum.
