Netflix is leading the charge in adapting popular anime and webcomics into live-action series and movies. They’ve already had success with titles like One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Originally a WEBToon that ran from 2019 to 2024 across ten volumes, Viral Hit has expanded into other formats. An anime adaptation with twelve episodes, produced by Okuruto Noboru with support from Crunchyroll, followed the comic’s conclusion. Here’s the story: Kota Shimura, a bullied and financially struggling high school student, decides to livestream himself fighting as a way to earn money. Despite having no fighting experience, he trains using online videos and with the help of his friends, Aki and Kanegon, taking on opponents while broadcasting with his phone. The series asks: why are these kids relying on fighting for a better life, and will it bring them money, fame, or something completely different?
WEBTOONs are making a huge impact on the anime world, with several adaptations becoming as popular as those originally based on manga. A prime example is Solo Leveling, the story of Jinwoo Sung, which became one of the most talked-about anime releases of 2024. Although the next season isn’t expected for a while, fans are eagerly awaiting to see how the story of the “World’s Worst Hunter” continues on screen.
