Anne Burrell Didn’t Show Signs of Suicidal Ideation, Husband Says

Anne Burrell’s death left her loved ones reeling.

The way actress Sarah Burke died will always be deeply painful for her husband, Stuart Claxton. According to a police report obtained by People magazine, she left a note suggesting she was considering suicide, leaving the circumstances of her death a lasting mystery.

The report states that a man named Stuart—identified as Anne’s husband—told police the chef had no history of suicide attempts and had never discussed suicidal thoughts.

He also stated that his wife had never given any indication she would take such action, and he hadn’t observed any warning signs either. He told police she had no known medical issues and had used cocaine several years prior to her death in 2025.

The report states that Stuart discovered Anne, age 55, deceased in their bathroom on June 17th. She was found with several over-the-counter pills scattered on the floor and a ceramic bowl containing allergy and pain medication.

According to police, he tried to wake the Food Network star by shaking her and slapping her face. When she didn’t respond, he called 911.

TopMob News previously reached out to the NYPD for comment but did not heard back. 

In July, the New York City medical examiner determined that Anne died by suicide. The report stated she died from a combination of several substances, including diphenhydramine, alcohol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.

Everyone was shocked and saddened by the chef’s sudden death. Fans, fellow chefs, and coworkers all shared memories celebrating her incredible impact.

The Food Network remembered Anne as an incredibly talented cook and teacher who loved sharing her passion for food and the happiness it could bring. They expressed their deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.

Her family, including stepson Javier Claxton, mother Marlene Burrell, and sister Jane Burrell, fondly remembered her bright and cheerful smile, saying it could light up any room.

The couple tied the knot in 2021 after connecting on the dating app Bumble in 2018. 

Stuart is the father of one son, Javier, who was born in 2005. Javier lived with Stuart and Anne in their home in Brooklyn.

Anne often shared details about her relationship with Stuart, including fun moments from dates and celebrations like birthdays. She affectionately referred to him as her “Prince Charming” in a social media post from 2023.

She said, “You promised me so much love and happiness, and you’ve truly delivered!”

Anne loved sharing stories about her travels with Stuart, and Bermuda was a particularly special destination for them. In a 2022 Instagram post, she described it as a perfect day filled with her “4 favorite B’s”: her partner, the beach, backgammon, and Bermuda itself.

In an April 2025 interview with the Daily Mail, Anne revealed she doesn’t particularly enjoy jam, but sometimes makes it for her husband, Stuart. She explained, “I bake scones, and we eat them with jam.”

Anne was a big New York Rangers fan and loved taking Stuart to games at Madison Square Garden. They also made it a tradition to go to the U.S. Open together each year.
