Don’t be ridiculous, everybody wants The Devil Wears Prada 3.
Even Anne Hathaway is hoping for another sequel! When Savannah Guthrie asked if a third movie might happen, Hathaway enthusiastically replied, “I hope so!”
Anne, who appeared in the latest film with returning stars Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, is enjoying the positive response to her reprisal of the role of Andy Sachs.
During her appearance on Today in June, Anne told Savannah that they were thrilled with the positive reaction to their work. They had worried about letting fans down, but the enthusiastic response has been far beyond anything they could have hoped for, and it’s a huge relief to them.
Anne Hathaway says it’s hard to say whether facing Miranda Priestly or dinosaurs – as she does in her new movie, The End of Oak Street, with Ewan McGregor – would be scarier.
Ugh, they were arguing about who had the more intense connection with Miranda, can you believe it? But honestly, Anne just nailed it when she said you actually got something real out of being with Miranda. Like, it wasn’t just drama, there was a connection! It was perfect, she totally understood!
Emily has one request if the cast of The Devil Wears Prada were to consider a reunion: she’d like to spend more time with her brother-in-law, Stanley, who is married to her sister Felicity Blunt. They married in 2012.

Emily shared with TopMob News at the New York City movie premiere on April 20th that she and her co-star, Stan, were frustrated with the limited scenes they had together. She jokingly added that if they make a sequel, she hopes they’ll feature her and Stan as a close, inseparable duo.
She confessed she loves him, which is why she wouldn’t allow Stanley to make a dark joke on Andy Cohen’s Sirius XM show about how long he might live, specifically referencing future seasons of their show, DWP.
Emily cautioned against making jokes about death during the April 20th event, specifically telling someone, ‘Don’t say ‘I’ll be dead.’

To which Stanley amended his quip: “Alright. I’ll be infirmed.”
As for Meryl? The 76-year-old said she’s always happy to dip her toe into sequel land.
“I’m up for it,” she admitted. “I’m up for Mamma Mia 3, myself.”
Although discussions about a potential third Devil Wears Prada movie are still very early, there are many interesting stories about the making of the first film. Here’s a look behind the scenes.

Even before the book The Devil Wears Prada was published, a movie adaptation was already being planned. Fox executives were impressed with just the first 100 pages and a summary, which were enough to convince them to buy the rights. As Carla Hacken, a former Fox executive, explained to Variety magazine in 2016, she was the first at the studio to read it and immediately recognized Miranda Priestly as a fantastic villain. She recalled that Fox quickly secured the project.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE the story behind getting this movie made! They started working on it before the book even came out in 2003! Can you imagine? But it was SO hard! Four different writers tried to just tell the story as it was written, but it wasn’t working. Then, thank goodness, they brought in Aline Brosh McKenna! She totally got it and decided to focus on what women really give up to climb the ladder at those fancy fashion magazines. She told The New York Times she actually wrote a first draft in just a month – a MONTH! – and then she rewrote it again and again, taking everyone’s feedback. It was a lot of work, but she nailed it!

Creating the story for the film presented challenges, particularly when it came to getting people in the fashion industry to share information. According to the author, many were hesitant to speak for fear of upsetting Anna Wintour and Vogue and facing repercussions. One source, who wished to remain anonymous, told her the characters were portrayed as too kind, pointing out that the real fashion world is much more cutthroat and fast-paced. As a result, the author revised the script to make the characters more driven and less agreeable.
Director David Frankel told Entertainment Weekly that Anna Wintour’s influence created some challenges finding filming locations. The Met Ball meant the Metropolitan Museum wasn’t willing to let them film there, and Bryant Park, then the regular home of New York Fashion Week, was also unavailable.
We even looked at some famous apartment buildings for Miranda’s place, but the building committees wouldn’t allow us to film there. Finally, a producer friend, Wendy Finerman, let us borrow a five-story townhouse on the Upper East Side.

Bethenny Frankel shared that the team perfectly recreated Anna Wintour’s office for the film. According to Frankel, production designer Jess Gonchor secretly visited Wintour’s actual office for inspiration. The recreation was so accurate that Wintour reportedly redecorated her real office soon after the movie’s release.

The costumes for the movie also proved difficult. At first, no major designers would offer clothing, as reported to EW. Frankel explained they were worried about upsetting Anna Wintour.
The film’s incredible costumes were created by the renowned Patricia Field, who gathered around 150 pieces from designers like Donna Karan, Zac Posen, Rick Owens, and even Prada. She carefully crafted looks that distinguished Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, from Anna Wintour herself. As Streep joked, “Everything was borrowed, so we had to be extra careful – no spaghetti at lunch!” because anything spilled couldn’t be returned.

Anna Wintour seems to have a good sense of humor about the situation. Meryl Streep spoke with the editor-in-chief of Vogue for the magazine’s 125th anniversary issue, discussing her role as Katherine Graham in the 2017 film, The Post. When asked about her most difficult role, Streep began to answer, but Wintour playfully interrupted, saying with a laugh, “No, no! We’re not going there, Meryl.”
Wintour actually did see a screening of the film—the very same one as her former assistant, Weisberger. She later explained to 60 Minutes that while she found it entertaining, it wasn’t an accurate portrayal of life at the magazine.
When it came time to film The Devil Wears Prada 2, Wintour even stopped by to lend her critical eye.

Meryl Streep was the only actress the studio considered for the role of Miranda, according to studio VP Hacken. She told Variety they were completely focused on getting Streep on board, saying, “I don’t remember anything other than, ‘Please God—let it be Meryl.'” Hacken was so excited when Streep’s agent called to say she’d read the script and wanted to meet with the director that she briefly put the agent on hold to celebrate. “I was shouting in my office,” she recalled.
Meryl Streep explained to Entertainment Weekly that she admired the character’s strength and refusal to compromise herself. She appreciated that the character didn’t shy away from her flaws, and especially that she didn’t try to be likable or charming to get what she wanted – something Streep’s friend, Carrie Fisher, called ‘playing the game.’ Streep noted that this character simply didn’t engage in those tactics.

Before agreeing to the role, Meryl Streep did something very characteristic of the demanding character she would play. Although she had already won two Oscars and received eleven more nominations, she wasn’t used to negotiating a higher salary. This time, however, she confidently asked for more money.
She told Variety that the initial offer felt a little low, and didn’t quite match how much she contributed to the project. After she prepared to leave, they doubled it. She was 55 years old and had recently learned to negotiate for herself.
Streep also requested specific scenes to ensure her character, Miranda, felt realistic and not overly exaggerated. She wanted a scene showcasing Miranda’s expertise in fashion – specifically, the famous discussion about Andy’s blue sweater – and another showing a vulnerable side, where Miranda is stripped of her usual composed demeanor, like in the hotel room scene.
Meryl Streep proactively decided on Miranda Priestly’s signature white hair, even showing up to a meeting with studio executives sporting the look. Director David Frankel told EW that Streep fully embodied the character during that meeting—the executives simply looked into her eyes and didn’t feel the need to comment on the hair at all.

Anne Hathaway revealed she wasn’t the first choice for her role in The Devil Wears Prada. She joked on RuPaul’s Drag Race that she was actually the ninth actress considered for the part, meaning she had to work extra hard to convince the filmmakers she was right for the role – perhaps even harder than her character, Andy, worked for Miranda.
Anne Hathaway shared with Variety that while she didn’t need to audition, she still had to work hard to get the part. This included a creative effort where she literally wrote “hire me” in the sand of a garden! When she finally found out she’d been cast, she was at home getting dressed with friends. She remembers running into her living room, still half-dressed, and excitedly yelling, “I got The Devil Wears Prada!”

Oh my gosh, can you believe it? Apparently, the studio really wanted Rachel McAdams for ‘The Devil Wears Prada’! Like, director Frankel told EW they asked her three times! She was filming ‘The Family Stone’ at the time, and after doing huge movies like ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘The Notebook,’ she just didn’t want to jump into another big, mainstream film. Honestly, the studio wouldn’t give up, but she was completely firm about not wanting the part. Thank goodness, really! I mean, can you imagine anyone but Anne Hathaway as Andy? It just wouldn’t be the same! It’s amazing how things work out, isn’t it?
Kate Hudson turned down a highly coveted role. She explained on Capital FM’s Capital Breakfast in February 2025 that it simply wasn’t the right time, and she regretted not making it work. She admitted that when she first saw the script, she had a negative reaction.
Meryl Streep, impressed by Anne Hathaway’s performance in the 2005 Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain, played a key role in getting Hathaway cast in The Princess Diaries. Director Garry Marshall remembered that Streep saw a scene from Brokeback Mountain, then spoke with Hathaway and called Fox executive Tom Rothman, telling him, “This girl is fantastic, and I think we’d work well together.”

Finding the right actress for Emily proved even harder. Frankel reviewed over 100 auditions for Miranda’s tough assistant – including one from Tracie Thoms, who later auditioned for the role of Andy’s friend Lily – but it was Emily Blunt, dressed down and relaxed, who really stood out.
Emily Blunt was already at the Fox studio auditioning for the film Eragon when a casting director asked her to read for The Devil Wears Prada. She recalled on The Late Late Show in May 2021 that she was in a hurry to catch a flight and felt flustered during the audition. She even admitted she was wearing sweatpants and didn’t look the part at all.
A few days after missing out on the role in Eragon, Emily Blunt received a call from casting director David Frankel. She told Variety that she was at a club in London and had to take the call from the bathroom. Frankel explained that while he liked her audition, the studio wanted to see her again, this time dressed more like the character.

Emily was originally conceived as an American character, but Kate Blunt’s performance changed that. When Blunt delivered the sharp dialogue with her British accent, the writers decided to rewrite the script to reflect that. As screenwriter McKenna explained to Entertainment Weekly, they met for coffee and added British phrases and expressions throughout the script.
Emily Blunt shared that she often draws inspiration from real life, even ‘stealing’ moments from people she encounters. She recounted an instance on The Howard Stern Show where she observed a frustrated mother in a supermarket while filming. The mother, while scolding her child, used a specific gesture and said, ‘Yeah, I’m hearing this, and I want to hear this.’ Blunt found the phrase so impactful that she incorporated it into one of her films.

Stanley Tucci played a key role in creating some of the most memorable lines in the film. After a lengthy search for the perfect actor to play art director Nigel, Tucci took on the role just in time, as he explained to EW. He then perfectly captured Nigel’s witty and sarcastic personality, even coming up with some of the character’s most famous lines on the spot.
Stanley Tucci recalled fondly a scene where Miranda first arrives at the office, causing a bit of a panic. He shared with Buzzfeed that the cast kept bursting into laughter, and director David Frankel would playfully suggest lines for him to deliver. Ultimately, ‘Gird your loins’ was the line that made the final cut. Tucci also told Entertainment Weekly about a rejected line he came up with – ‘Tits in!’ – which always sent everyone into fits of laughter.

One of his most cherished memories from making the film is the connection he made with his costars. He became close with Emily Blunt and was even invited to her wedding to John Krasinski in 2010. It was there he reconnected with Felicity Blunt, who is now his wife. They married in 2012 and have two children, Matteo and Emilia.
As Joe Tucci shared with People magazine, he first met his current wife at the premiere of a film in 2006. He was still married to his late wife, Kate, who had just been diagnosed with breast cancer at the time. He explained that he made the film, Kate began treatment, and then they attended the premiere. Kate lived for four more years after that. Interestingly, Felicity—Emily’s sister and now Joe’s wife—and Kate actually spoke at the premiere, and Joe has a photo of them together, which he finds quite strange.

Rosario Dawson, similar to Anne Hathaway, clearly remembers when she found out she’d been cast as Lily. It happened on her 30th birthday in August 2005. While she felt good about her audition – having often played supportive best friend roles at that point in her career, she thought Lily would be a natural fit – she was still overjoyed to get the news.
She remembered being at Dartmouth, workshopping a new play by Alan Ball, when she found out she’d gotten a role in The Devil Wears Prada. She told TopMob News she received the news casually over lunch in the cafeteria – someone simply wished her a happy birthday and told her she’d been cast. She described it as a wonderful birthday memory.

Thoms recalls seeing Adrian Grenier, who was very popular during his role on Entourage, surrounded by fans. Instead of signing autographs, Grenier cleverly gave each fan a CD by his band, The Honey Brothers.
Thoms observed that Josh Grenier, playing Nate, used his role to highlight the talents of his bandmates, since he wasn’t the lead singer. Thoms admired how Grenier thoughtfully acknowledged everyone’s contributions and actively returned the support to his fellow musicians.

Thoms really enjoyed her time working on the project, describing it as feeling like a grown-up, big-city experience similar to the show Sex and the City. However, she does have one thing she wishes she’d done differently.
She had a specific idea for how to handle the Marc Jacobs bag that Lily and Thoms clearly coveted in a memorable scene. She requested the props team keep the bag hidden until filming began, wanting her reaction to be authentic. “The excited gasping and reaching – the ‘I need it!’ moment – happened because the bag was truly stunning.”
She confessed to TopMob News that the purse was so beautiful she actually planned how to keep it. She even imagined a scene where she’d accidentally leave with it, but that part of the story was removed. Sadly, that meant she never had a chance to take the purse home with her after work.

As a lifestyle expert, I always say, sometimes the biggest magic happens when plans change! That was definitely the case with Meryl Streep’s character in ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ Initially, no one was scheduled to film in Paris for the final scenes – imagine, no Parisian backdrop for that iconic fashion week trip! When the producers told me, I was honestly shocked. But, we quickly rallied, creating a compelling preview that showed the studio the film’s potential. Thankfully, they were convinced to move the release to the summer and even increase the budget, allowing us to bring Paris to life on screen!
Meryl Hathaway and Simon Baker (playing Christian, her other love interest) traveled to France to film scenes for two days. However, Meryl Streep filmed her parts in New York because the studio said it would be too expensive to fly her to France.

Meryl Streep actually ended up missing out on a lot of the enjoyable moments on set. She later told Entertainment Weekly that fully immersing herself in her stern Miranda character and distancing herself from the playful atmosphere was a difficult experience. She could hear everyone having fun, which made her feel down. She jokingly told herself it was a necessary sacrifice for playing the boss, and it was the last time she ever tried such a dedicated acting approach.
Before Meryl Streep playfully turned distant, she offered Anne Hathaway a quick word of encouragement, as Hathaway told People. Streep said, “I want you to know I think you’re going to be great, and I’m so happy to work with you…and that’s the last nice thing I’m going to say to you.”
That’s all.
