Another New The Simpsons Movie Is Happening (& It’s Not What Anyone Ever Expected)

Get ready for more Simpsons! A new movie, The Simpsons Movie 2, is scheduled to come out in theaters on September 3rd, 2027. Traditionally, the films have centered around the Simpson family, but there’s a possibility that future movies will explore stories focused on some of the show’s beloved supporting characters. A filmmaker recently hinted online that they are working on an unannounced Springfield project. And it seems one villain, in particular, is deserving of his own dedicated film.

Filmmaker Boots Riley, known for his work on projects like Sorry to Bother You and I’m a Virgo, has confirmed he’s developing a Simpsons movie centered around Mr. Burns. The project originated from a live-action play called Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play by Anne Washburn, which spoofs The Simpsons and focuses entirely on the villainous owner of Springfield’s Nuclear Power Plant. Riley confirmed the adaptation is really happening after a post about the movie appeared on social media.

What is This Post-Electric Production?

If you’re not familiar with Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, it’s a live performance that premiered in 2012 and has been running ever since. Despite the title, the play isn’t about Springfield. Instead, it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world where characters try to remember and then reenact a specific episode of The Simpsons, following the adventures of the whole family. As the story unfolds, they essentially create a new version of the show, culminating in a particularly wicked act by Mr. Burns.

Harry Shearer has voiced the character of Mr. Burns on The Simpsons for over thirty years, and continues to do so even now in his eighties. Mr. Burns remains a troublemaker in Springfield, largely driven by his desire for money. The show has been renewed for a fortieth season, guaranteeing at least three more seasons of his villainous schemes. While details haven’t been released, a new production from Riley Boots will likely be live-action, though Mr. Burns might appear in animated form to contribute to the story.
