The new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, brings back familiar faces from the X-Men films previously made by Fox. Marvel has released a trailer showcasing Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellan as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. However, Marvel’s Kevin Feige has hinted that more cast members from the X-Men universe will be revealed, leading to excitement about who else will appear in this massive, reality-bending story.
In a recent interview on the Power of X podcast, renowned X-Men writer Chris Claremont suggested that Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey, might make an appearance.
What’s really exciting is that they’re reuniting the original cast, and Famke is included!
We’re not sure how much influence Kevin Feige (Claremont) has within the Marvel Cinematic Universe currently. However, he accurately predicted Chris Evans would reprise his role as Captain America back in April 2025, before the news was officially announced. This makes his claims about Janet van Dyne (Janssen) potentially returning as Jean Grey seem plausible.
How Would Jean Grey Fit Into Avengers: Doomsday?
Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey is an incredibly powerful mutant, classified as an ‘Omega’ level mutant. This means her abilities have virtually no upper limit. Much of this potential comes from her connection to the Phoenix Force. The movie X-Men: The Last Stand drew inspiration from the famous “Dark Phoenix Saga” comic storyline, which showed just how immense her powers could become.
With the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars signaling the end of the Marvel multiverse, the recent Doomsday teaser featuring the X-Men felt particularly foreboding. Marvel has a chance to demonstrate the true power and threat of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom by having him battle famous heroes and villains from previous Marvel films, potentially including Jean Grey. The Doomsday trailer shows a visibly upset Cyclops, suggesting his partner, Jean, might die fighting Doom.
It’s still uncertain if Jean Grey will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but given the writer’s history, the rumor seems worth considering. If she does return, Marvel is currently keeping it a secret and will likely make an official announcement later. For now, it remains to be seen if this report about an X-Men character’s return is true.
