Stephen King is a hugely popular author, so it’s surprising to see two of his projects cancelled recently. The Duffer Brothers, known for Stranger Things, have stepped away from adapting The Talisman, a book they’d been working on for some time. This novel, co-written with Peter Straub, has been difficult to bring to the screen since it was published, and now a Netflix adaptation has also been cancelled. This is another setback for fans hoping to see The Talisman adapted for television or film.
Following the news that the Duffer Brothersā Stephen King project was scrapped by Netflix, another adaptation of Kingās work has been cancelled. According to Mattās Inside Line, the TV series The Revelations of āBecka Paulson is no longer moving forward. Originally announced in 2020, the show was based on Kingās short story of the same name. The cancellation seems to be a result of the CW being bought by Nexstar in 2022, as the networkās new owners are rethinking expensive adaptations.
Why So Many Stephen King Adaptations Are Getting Cancelled

The cancellation of The Talisman series was a letdown, but not unexpected for those familiar with the difficulties of adapting Stephen Kingās novel. Previous attempts have fallen through repeatedly, even with directors like Steven Spielberg once involved. The creators of Stranger Things seemed like a perfect match, given their success with similar supernatural adventure stories. However, considering the long and troubled history of trying to get The Talisman made, most fans werenāt surprised when the project was ultimately scrapped.
The decision to cancel The Revelations of āBecka Paulson came as more of a surprise, though perhaps it shouldn’t have. The story was previously adapted for television as an episode of The Outer Limits back in 1997. This cancellation, however, appears to be part of a growing trend of networks abandoning plans to adapt Stephen Kingās work, which is disappointing news for his fans.
Given how well Stephen King adaptations have performed in 2025, the quick cancellation of two new projects feels unusual. However, that very success might be the reason. Projects like IT: Welcome to Derry and The Long Walk were more critically acclaimed than anticipated. The Revelations of āBecka Paulson isnāt considered one of Kingās strongest works, and itās possible the show was cancelled because it didnāt measure up to the quality of these recent, successful adaptations.
Meanwhile, fans have been excitedly waiting for years for The Talisman. The Duffer Brothers seemed like the perfect team to bring it to life, but the project would likely be very expensive, which could scare off potential studios. While the success of shows like Stranger Things and IT: Welcome to Derry suggests The Talisman could also be a hit, they also create high expectations and a tough comparison. It’s especially frustrating to see two Stephen King adaptations fall through so close together.
