In an interview with Variety, Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson) shared his thoughts about some memorable roles and productions in his acting career. One significant portion of the discussion focused on Captain America: Brave New World, where Mackie made his big-screen debut as Captain America. Mackie confessed that he didn’t anticipate playing Captain America because Chris Evans had already established himself in the role, having led a trilogy of Captain America films. However, Mackie explained that Marvel initially seemed committed to giving each hero three solo movies, but now they have broadened their approach.
Mackie expressed that he didn’t expect to take on the role of Captain America, as Evans was already doing a fantastic job in the part. He mentioned that Marvel usually allows actors three films before moving on, with Thor being an exception who had 17 movies. So, Mackie thought there would be a standalone Falcon movie instead, but he never imagined it would become a Falcon and Captain America film.
Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
Mackie, who initially didn’t expect to play Captain America, is now imagining a long stint as the character. Before the premiere of “Brave New World“, he expressed his desire to portray Captain America for another decade, mentioning a fifth solo Captain America film, future Avengers movies, and occasional guest appearances in other characters’ films as potential projects. However, the fate of Sam Wilson beyond “Avengers: Secret Wars” remains uncertain.
It’s understandable why Sam Wilson (Mackie) had this perspective during the Infinity Saga, as Chris Evans was a perfect fit for Steve Rogers and could have easily led more films if that was Marvel’s plan. However, the choices made for Avengers: Endgame paved the way for Mackie’s role to evolve. With Evans deciding to leave the MCU, they gave Steve Rogers a touching conclusion, allowing him to grow old with Peggy Carter. Since Mackie wouldn’t have known about this development before filming Avengers: Endgame, he must have thought he would just continue playing Falcon.
In the anticipation of upcoming Marvel films like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” fans eagerly await Evans’ potential return, but Mackie is perfectly suited to continue the Captain America legacy. Over the course of his appearances, Sam Wilson has evolved significantly as a character, demonstrating his readiness for leadership. With Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s New Avengers in action, Sam is forming his own team, making it intriguing to see him step into this role, defending Earth-616 (and potentially other dimensions) from the menace of Doctor Doom. Here’s hoping Mackie gets to embody Captain America for another decade, preferably in projects that garner even greater acclaim, much like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” It’s high time he starred in a standalone film as captivating as that one.
