Anthony Mackie & Captain America’s MCU Future Gets Update Ahead of Chris Evans’ Return

Even though Chris Evans is coming back as Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie will continue to play Captain America as Sam Wilson.

Chris Evans played Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a decade, starting with the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger and concluding with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. In the final film, his character, Steve Rogers, passed on the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson.

Sam Wilson officially became Captain America in the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, after initially hesitating. Anthony Mackie then starred in the 2025 film Captain America: Brave New World, his first time leading a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. He’ll next be in Avengers: Doomsday, which will surprisingly bring Chris Evans back as the original Steve Rogers.

What does the future hold for Anthony Mackie’s Captain America in the MCU?

Some fans are concerned that Steve Rogers’ appearance in the ‘Doomsday’ storyline hints at Sam Wilson relinquishing the Captain America title. This worry is amplified by rumors that the upcoming ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will essentially reset parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially bringing back characters in new or old roles.

Good news for fans of Sam Wilson as Captain America! According to a recent report from James Mack on X (formerly Twitter), Sam will continue in his roles as both Captain America and an Avenger, and there aren’t any major changes planned for his character.

Even though Sam Wilson will continue as Captain America for now, Steve Rogers could still return to the role. Marvel Comics has already been featuring both characters as Captain America for several years, and the studio might follow that same path in future movies, potentially after the ‘Secret Wars’ storyline.

Marvel Studios has announced that ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ bringing Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson together again, will hit theaters on December 18, 2026. The film is planned as part of Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans won’t have to wait much longer – just ten months – to see it.
