Anya Taylor-Joy seemingly confirms the future of one of her most beloved projects.
The Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the exceptionally talented chess player Beth Harmon, premiered in 2020. The show follows Beth’s journey from a young prodigy to a world champion, all while she battles personal struggles and the pressures of newfound fame. Even years later, in 2023, The Queen’s Gambit remained incredibly popular on streaming platforms and received high praise from critics, earning a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This success strongly suggests that many viewers would be eager for a second season.
So, I was reading an interview with Anya Taylor-Joy over on Entertainment Tonight, and she pretty much put the brakes on any hopes for a sequel to The Queen’s Gambit. When they asked about continuing the story, she said she actually thinks it’s perfect as is. She worries adding anything more might actually hurt what they’ve already created, and feels like the story has a really satisfying ending – all nicely tied up with a bow, basically. As a fan, it’s a little disappointing, but honestly, I get where she’s coming from. Some stories are just best left as they are!
The Queen’s Gambit is a satisfying miniseries with a complete, self-contained story. The series concludes with Beth, having overcome personal struggles and improved her well-being, traveling to Russia for a crucial chess match. She wins, becoming a Grandmaster, and finds contentment while playing a casual game with local men in a Moscow park.
Although fans are still talking about a possible second season of The Queen’s Gambit, many believe the show is already complete and perfect. Anya Taylor-Joy, the lead actress, agrees that making another season could damage the original’s success. She’s also been very busy with other projects since 2020, including roles in Last Night in Soho, The Northman, The Menu, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Furiousa: A Mad Max Saga, and Dune: Part Two.
Anya Taylor-Joy will also appear in the upcoming films Dune: Part Three and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Although she doesn’t have many confirmed projects at the moment, that could change quickly. The cast of The Queen’s Gambit also includes other well-known and up-and-coming actors, such as Thomas Brodie-Sangster (known for The Artful Dodger), Moses Ingram (A House of Dynamite), and Harry Melling (Pillion).
Netflix created a truly impressive limited series, and it’s clear the people who made it are very proud of their work. Although there’s potential to continue Beth Harmon’s story after she becomes a chess champion, with new rivals emerging, it isn’t really needed. Given how many shows and movies get endless sequels these days, it’s good that the creators of The Queen’s Gambit are moving on to new and different projects.
All episodes of The Queen’s Gambit can be streamed on Netflix.
