As a seasoned tech investor and long-time Apple enthusiast, I must admit my initial excitement for Apple Intelligence was palpable. Having watched Apple revolutionize industries with its sleek design and intuitive software, I anticipated another game-changer with this AI stack. However, after reading the less-than-stellar reviews from fellow tech journalists, my enthusiasm has waned somewhat.
Apple has formally unveiled its latest AI system, Apple Intelligence, for specific iPhone, iPad, and Mac users; yet, early critics claim that the novel AI features have not met the high expectations set by the buzz surrounding their release.
On October 28th, the company unveiled the initial suite of innovative AI features, which were introduced alongside the launches of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1 (version Sequoia).
With the introduction of “Writing Tools,” Apple’s latest AI functionality, users will be able to polish their writing by automatically rephrasing, correcting errors, and condensing text within Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages, as well as third-party applications. Moreover, conversations with Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, are now more conversational and natural in nature.
Users can now utilize ChatGPT directly through Writing Tools and Siri. This means they can take advantage of its powerful image and document comprehension features all in one place, without the need to toggle between different applications.
Additionally, it implemented a feature known as “Natural Language Search” within the Photos application. This empowers users to identify pictures by describing them instead of laboriously scrolling through numerous photos to locate a specific one.
However, some Apple users weren’t overly thrilled with the new AI features.
Max Eddy, a contributor to The New York Times who got a sneak peek at Apple’s pre-launch edition, didn’t seem overly enthusiastic, expressing his thoughts as: “Apple’s pre-release version didn’t leave me feeling particularly excited.
“We think the highly touted AI-transformed future still seems a long way off.”
In simpler terms, Julian Chokkattu, a senior editor for reviews at WIRED, didn’t find it particularly impressive when he got an early look at the product.
“I’ve been living with a beta version of Apple Intelligence for over a month, and life hasn’t changed much since its features arrived on my iPhone 16 Pro.”
“You might find yourself saying, ‘Is that it?’” Chokkattu added.
Accessing Apple Intelligence proved a problem of its own for many other Apple users too.
To participate in the waitlist, individuals using Apple products in the U.S. should ensure they own a device that is compatible with Apple Intelligence and have installed the most recent version of Apple’s software on their devices.
For individuals who aren’t already users, the process becomes a bit more intricate as they need to adjust both their region and language preferences specifically to “United States” and “English (US)” respectively, prior to adding themselves to the waiting list.
User Mikey characterized Apple Intelligence as having a “messy launch,” which he claimed was the most disorganized release Apple has ever made. Meanwhile, user T suggested that Apple should have postponed the rollout of their AI tools until they were fully operational and easily available to all users.
Apple made no mention of a waitlist in its Oct. 28 announcement.
According to Brandon Butch, who’s both a YouTuber and an Apple tech reviewer, Apple users are required to enroll on a waiting list as they need to access Apple Intelligence’s models directly from Apple’s servers for downloading purposes.
Apple was initially scheduled to release Apple Intelligence in September.
Apple announced plans for a December release of a new feature called “Instant Recognition,” which enables users to quickly identify and gain information about various objects and locations straight away.
Apple mentioned that users can easily access details about nearby restaurants and even interact with the information, such as translating text between languages.

In the upcoming months, the company plans to introduce a Priority Notifications feature. This function will be capable of utilizing a user’s personal details to offer customized intelligence.
In my role as a researcher, I’m actively exploring the integration of ChatGPT into Apple’s upcoming Writing Tools and advanced Siri functionalities. However, it’s essential to emphasize that Apple respects user privacy, so the decision to utilize these features remains entirely with the user. They have the choice to opt-in or continue without integrating ChatGPT, ensuring their privacy preferences are always respected.
