Apple TV Adapting New Remake Of 36-Year-Old Tom Hanks & Bruce Willis Satire With Matt Reeves

Award-winning producer David E. Kelley is said to be working on an Apple TV series based on the movie, The Bonfire of the Vanities.

Released in 1990, The Bonfire of the Vanities is a darkly comedic film starring Tom Hanks as Sherman McCoy and Bruce Willis as Peter Fallow. The movie’s cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Melanie Griffith, and Kim Cattrall. It’s based on Tom Wolfe’s popular 1987 novel of the same name.

This comedy tells the story of Sherman, a Wall Street trader whose life falls apart when his mistress, Maria, is involved in a hit-and-run accident with his car. The incident becomes public, sparking a media frenzy and a court case that ruins his carefully built reputation.

Sources at Variety report that Kelley is writing and executive producing the upcoming series, alongside Sarah Geismer and Matt Reeves, who will also direct. The series, based on Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities, is currently in development for Apple TV+ with Warner Bros. Television.

Even with rumors circulating, very little is known about the planned remake of The Bonfire of the Vanities as of today. Apple TV has not commented on the project, and representatives declined to provide any details when contacted by Variety.

Kelley is a prolific television producer with a strong track record at Apple TV+, where he developed and produced successful series like Presumed Innocent, which has been picked up for another season. He’s also the writer and showrunner for Margo’s Got Money Troubles, coming to the platform on April 15, 2026. Beyond Apple TV+, Kelley has contributed to popular shows on other streaming services, including Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, HBO’s Big Little Lies, and Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers.
