The new Apple TV series, The Hunt, was originally scheduled to launch on December 3rd, but all related advertising and information disappeared from the platform last week. Speculation arose about the reason for the sudden change, and reports now suggest the show bears strong similarities to the 1973 novel Shoot by Douglas Fairbairn, raising potential copyright issues. Apple TV is currently investigating these concerns and has postponed the series release and removed all promotional content.
Deadline reported the cause of the delays and obtained a statement from French production company Gaumont explaining the unexpected choices they made.
Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that the premiere of my new series, The Hunt, is on hold for a little bit. We’re taking some time to double-check everything on our end and make sure all the rights are clear – basically, we want to be absolutely sure we’ve done everything by the book when it comes to creative ownership. We really respect the work of others, and we’re taking this seriously.
Since Fairbairn passed away in 1997, his estate now manages any issues related to copyright.
What Was ‘The Hunt’ About?

Apple TV
Apple TV previously described the series:
The series, created by Cédric Anger, centers on Franck, played by Benoît Megimel, and his close-knit group of friends. Their regular weekend hunting trips take a dangerous turn when they’re unexpectedly targeted by another group. After one of them is shot, they fight back and manage to get away. But when Franck returns home to his wife, Krystel (Mélanie Laurent), he feels like he’s being followed and believes the other hunters are seeking revenge.
The series also features performances by Damien Bonnard, Manuel Guillot, Cédric Appietto, Angelyna Danabe-Mignot, Paul Beaurepaire, Yann Goven, Sarah Pachoud, and Patrick De Vallette.
The sudden removal of the program naturally led to a lot of questions from viewers, especially because Apple TV+ recently cancelled another show, The Savant, in a similar way. Now that we know why the program was delayed, it’s clear that the delays weren’t connected to the The Savant cancellation.
Apple TV+ delayed the release of the Jessica Chastain series, The Savant, in September, shortly before its planned debut. The show follows a woman (Chastain) who goes undercover in online hate groups plotting violence. While Apple didn’t give an official reason for the delay, it happened after the shooting of Charlie Kirk and the temporary cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following host Kimmel’s controversial remarks. Many believed Apple was waiting for a less sensitive time to release the show. However, Chastain, who also produced the series, emphasized that the story felt particularly relevant, as it focuses on preventing violent acts.
