Apple TV+’s most popular show is back later this month, and fans of giant monsters have a lot to look forward to. While the streaming service has found success with shows like Ted Lasso and Slow Horses, their epic monster series has been a standout hit since its debut in 2023. With both Godzilla and Kong returning soon – on streaming this month and in theaters next year – Apple TV+ subscribers are revisiting the MonsterVerse to refresh their knowledge of this exciting sci-fi universe.
Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters quickly became the platform’s most popular original series when it launched, but viewership naturally decreased over time. Recently, however, the show has climbed back into the top ten, likely because fans are either catching up before the second season or revisiting the story. Currently, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the fourth most-streamed show on Apple TV+, behind Shrinking, Tehran, and Hijack. Given the series’ connection to the MonsterVerse and its exploration of fantastical realms and time-bending concepts, it’s no surprise fans are revisiting the Legacy of Monsters.
What Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Second Season Will Be

Watching Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was a trip through time! The show jumped between 1959, showing how the first giant monsters, or kaiju, appeared, and 2014, right when Godzilla first showed up in the MonsterVerse. Throughout both timelines, I saw this organization studying the kaiju trying to control the chaos caused by these massive creatures, all while navigating some complicated dealings with the U.S. government. Godzilla was definitely the star for most of the first season, but Kong popped up in the finale. And with Kong being heavily featured in the previews for season two, it’s clear he’s going to be a much bigger part of the story when the show returns.
The trailers for the new season of the Apple TV show reveal several new giant monsters, or kaiju, will be joining the MonsterVerse. It’s currently unknown if these Titans are updated versions of classic monsters from Toho, but the show’s creators have expressed interest in introducing more familiar creatures. Last year, we spoke with series creators Matt Fraction and Chris Black, and they shared some hints about which monsters they’d like to feature.
During an interview, Black expressed his desire to see Hedorah, the Smog Monster, appear in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, noting Toho’s extensive catalog of monsters and their willingness to collaborate. He believes any of Toho’s creations could be incorporated into the series. Meanwhile, Fraction hoped to introduce Jet Jaguar to the MonsterVerse, describing him as a personal favorite despite not being a traditional kaiju.
