In simpler terms, two key actors from the Aquaman series within the DC Extended Universe have expressed uncertainty about rejoining the cast for James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe.
It might come as a shock to DC Comics enthusiasts that the film “Aquaman” from 2018 holds the record for the highest-grossing movie based on a DC Comic character, raking in a staggering $1.152 billion globally. This blockbuster superhero film was skillfully directed by renowned filmmaker James Wan, with Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson sharing leading roles as Arthur Curry (Aquaman) and his half-brother Orm Marius (Ocean Master). Both actors reprised their roles in the 2023 sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which marked the conclusion of the DC Extended Universe.
Are James Wan and Patrick Wilson returning for the DCU’s Aquaman reboot?
In an exciting turn of events, I’m thrilled to share that Jason Momoa will grace the new DC Universe, not as Aquaman this time, but as the formidable Lobo! As for James Wan and Pat Wilson, during a recent interview for their movie, The Conjuring: Last Rites, they hinted that a revisit to the DCU might not be in the cards for them.
Wilson stated that he has never met James Gunn and thus has no connection in that regard. He clarified that although Peter Safran, Gunn’s partner, is a long-time producer for The Conjuring series, their interactions have been confined to their shared work on Orm. Wilson expressed his fondness for both Safran and the character.
Alternatively phrased, Wan confessed that he conversed briefly and casually with Safran about a possible DC comeback. However, he emphasized that no formal plans are set yet since he’s currently focusing on his mental health by taking a break from directing.
Wan admitted that he and Peter have only exchanged superficial conversations so far. However, he has taken a break from directing to focus on his mental health because it can be exhausting, both physically and emotionally. He mentioned that he might return to work in the future, but for now, he’s easing back into it. What he’s most interested in is potentially diving back into horror filmmaking.
At present, you can stream both Aquaman films on HBO Max, but The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to premiere in theaters on September 5, 2025.
