As the next big update for ARC Raiders approaches, teased earlier this week, the game’s production director, Caio Braga, has addressed a key issue: a shortage of things to do for players who have already completed most of the game. In a GamesRadar interview, Braga explained how Embark Studios prioritizes and tackles problems during game development.
We still follow the same process, but things work a bit differently now that our team has grown. When we initially reset things, we were a small group of 25 people, making it easy to identify the biggest issues. Now that we have 120 people, those problems are distributed across different teams. For example, an issue might go directly to the UX team, who then handles it within their area. We all agree on the top problems and improvements, and what level of quality is acceptable, before work begins. Occasionally, we identify issues that affect everyone, requiring contributions from all five internal teams, which adds complexity due to our larger size – essentially multiplying the effort across those teams.
This often means the team is fixing issues as they come up, usually while others are focused on releasing big content updates. Currently, the studio is prioritizing game balance and figuring out what new content will keep players engaged after they’ve completed everything else in ARC Raiders.
According to Braga, maintaining balance isn’t so much a problem as something they’re constantly focused on. This live game environment, with so many players, is new territory for them. They’re working to figure out which updates have the biggest positive effect on players, as they’ve noticed some things are more popular than others. With a smaller team, they’re learning to prioritize updates that make the biggest difference and improve with each release.
Braga has stated the studio is committed to continually increasing the difficulty in ARC Raiders. He explained they want to provide ongoing challenges, particularly for players who have completed most of the game. They aim to offer more content and tougher obstacles for these dedicated players, while also ensuring everyone has the tools they need to enjoy the experience.
The game ARC Raiders is playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Due to its successful launch, Nexon has promoted Patrick Söderlund, the CEO of the studio behind the game, to executive chairman of the company.
