The game ARC Raiders has gained popularity by combining player-versus-player and player-versus-environment gameplay, largely due to its active community and the difficult challenges presented by the ARCs. According to design lead Virgil Watkins in a GamesRadar interview, the developers at Embark Studios plan to increase the difficulty of the player-versus-environment content even further in future updates.
A major hurdle in ARC Raiders currently is the six-legged boss, the Queen. However, the developers at Embark Studios recognize they can’t simply add more robots designed like her. They need to find ways to make the game increasingly challenging for players. If they don’t, players will quickly become skilled at defeating Queens and other similar bosses, ultimately eliminating the feeling of threat these enemies are meant to create.
We’re currently satisfied with what we have, but we can’t keep relying on just that forever. If we keep adding more and more of the same thing – like another large, spider-like robot – players will eventually get the idea. So, we’re thinking about how to evolve those experiences, especially for players enjoying the PvE content, and find ways to make them even more engaging.
As players become more skilled and learn to master the game, the existing drones aren’t as challenging anymore. They’ve learned how the drones attack and found ways to easily avoid or defeat them. Therefore, we’re focusing on making the drones more difficult to keep the game engaging for experienced players.
Watkins has pointed out that a major hurdle for Embark Studios with these larger challenges is whether their servers can handle them. The studio wants to introduce bigger and more powerful ARC robots, but they’re concerned that doing so could overload and crash their servers.
As Watkins described it, the biggest hurdle is balancing creative ideas with technical limitations. They want to explore exciting possibilities, but need to ensure their ideas don’t overwhelm the game’s servers or exceed its capabilities. While they have big plans, and those giant creatures in the background hint at their ultimate goals, they’re focusing on demonstrating a range of scales and possibilities as the game develops.
