Arc Raiders Is Struggling to Get Players to Care About Expeditions

Arc Raiders really captures the essence of a good extraction shooter. The game creates a consistently tense atmosphere without feeling chaotic, and each playthrough delivers that classic blend of thrill and pressure that fans enjoy. Even with some imperfections, it’s clear the developers at Embark Studios understand what makes this genre appealing and keeps players engaged.

Expeditions in the game currently aren’t very engaging. Instead of feeling like important missions, they come across as repetitive tasks that don’t give players a strong reason to keep playing. Players are quickly losing interest as they try to complete them, and the developers have already acknowledged the system isn’t working as intended and needs improvement. While Expeditions are meant to be a key feature that keeps players coming back to Arc Raiders, they’re currently a source of frustration rather than excitement.

Why Arc Raiders’ Expedition Rewards Aren’t Appealing to Players

The main problem with Expeditions isn’t that they’re hard, but that the rewards don’t feel worth the effort. Players invest a lot of time and progress, only to have it reset, and the final rewards aren’t exciting enough to justify that work. Considering raids are already challenging with real risks, Expeditions need to offer a truly special reward. If players are going to restart their progress, the payoff needs to be much greater, especially since failing a run wipes out progress without feeling truly rewarding, despite the nice ending cutscene. Many players simply don’t see enough value in the current system.

Expeditions don’t currently feel special enough compared to the normal way you progress in Arc Raiders. After finishing an Expedition, the rewards often get lost in the shuffle instead of feeling like a unique accomplishment. You mainly earn cosmetic items and skill points, but since skills aren’t essential for success in Arc Raiders, these points don’t feel very impactful. This lack of meaningful rewards makes Expeditions feel separate from the main game, rather than being a key part of it.

The uninspiring nature of these expeditions also diminishes players’ long-term desire to keep playing. While designed to encourage players to repeatedly use the game’s features, they don’t offer enough compelling gameplay to build lasting interest. They don’t feel like worthwhile objectives, and the effort required doesn’t lead to satisfying results. In a game type known for exciting experiences and clear rewards, this disconnect makes expeditions easy to abandon after the initial experience.

The Tightrope Embark Faces in Revamping Expeditions

Simply increasing rewards or making Expeditions easier isn’t the solution. Embark Studios needs to be cautious about changing the core gameplay balance and feel of Arc Raiders. If Expeditions become the fastest way to improve and offer the best items, players might feel obligated to participate even if they don’t enjoy them. This could turn an optional activity into a necessary one, which usually creates a negative experience in games like this—or in most games, really.

It’s tricky to balance respecting our current players with making meaningful improvements to Expeditions. Many players have already put a lot of time and effort into the current system, and big changes could make them feel like that time was wasted. However, ignoring player feedback and leaving things mostly the same would also be a problem. We need to find a way to improve Expeditions that feels worthwhile without dismissing the progress everyone has already made.

Honestly, I’m still hopeful about Arc Raiders. The developers at Embark have been really upfront about the issues with Expeditions, and they’re talking about ways to make them more rewarding. The game itself feels solid, and Expeditions could be amazing if they just gave us clearer objectives and better rewards for completing them. If Embark nails it, these Expeditions could go from being a bit of a letdown to a core reason why we all love playing Arc Raiders.
