Resetting progress is always tricky in games where you collect items and try to survive. While it creates a fair start for everyone, losing all your hard work can be discouraging. With ARC Raiders, the developers, Embark Studios, are letting players choose to reset their progress and start over, but they’ll receive some extra benefits and rewards for doing so.
The first of these events, called Expeditions, launched last month with the release of Cold Snap and attracted just over one million players, according to design director Virgil Watkins. However, the development team believes there’s still room for improvement.
We received feedback that the requirements for earning skill points in the final stage were unclear, and that we shared that information too late. We had waited to announce them because we wanted to base them on how players were actually earning and spending in the game, rather than making early guesses. We ultimately set the final requirement at five million credits, intending it to be a challenging goal. However, many players interpreted it as a mandatory step to unlock the skill points.
In addition to the numbers already mentioned, Watkins estimates that around 35% to 40% of players earned all the available skill points, which is a significant achievement. However, the developers at Embark want players to actively use the weapons they’ve worked hard to obtain, rather than just trying to quickly find replacements as an Expedition nears its end.
We understand that focusing solely on rewards isn’t very exciting, and it could discourage players from using their best equipment, especially near the end of a season. We’re currently considering changes to address this.
We’re hoping to shake things up a bit and give players more reasons to jump into Expeditions. We want to make it so everyone feels rewarded, even if they haven’t quite met all the usual requirements – maybe they’re short on time, or just haven’t gotten there yet. Plus, we’re keeping a close eye on what people think of the rewards they’re getting after finishing an Expedition to make sure we’re hitting the mark.
So, the next big Expedition is still a ways off, and it sounds like Embark is planning some tweaks before it hits. They haven’t said exactly what’s coming in the next update for ARC Raiders, but they’re definitely focusing on cracking down on cheaters – they’ve noticed a recent spike, which is super annoying. Plus, they’re going to be balancing things out for weapons like the Trigger Nade, Stitcher, and Kettle. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more details, and you should too!
