Embark Studios announced a new feature coming to ARC Raiders called the Hurricane map condition. The studio explains that while the world of Speranza has weathered storms before, this Hurricane will be a significantly greater threat. Players can experience the Hurricane with a free update on February 24th, and it will dramatically change how the game plays.
Speranza has faced difficult times before, but this hurricane is unlike anything it’s seen. People sheltering underground can hear the powerful winds, which are already damaging anything above ground, especially for those reckless enough to be out in them. Shani is getting ready to completely seal everything up, meaning no one will be allowed to leave. Of course, that’s exactly what some people will want to do.
The hurricane presents three main challenges: wind, scattered debris, and limited visibility. Wind speed will significantly impact your movement – facing the wind will slow you down and drain your energy, while having the wind at your back will make you faster. Wind will also affect thrown items like grenades, altering their flight path. Even things like smoke, gas, and jumping will be influenced by the wind’s direction and strength.
The strong winds will kick up a lot of dust and debris, causing your shields to wear down faster than usual – they weren’t designed to withstand this constant barrage. In the game, this means shields will lose effectiveness, and players outdoors will be easier to spot. You might find yourself temporarily removing your shield to move more stealthily. Visibility will also be significantly reduced, which could be a drawback, but clever players can use the limited sightlines to ambush their rivals.
Players might risk venturing into the hurricane to find valuable Raider Caches – remnants of the initial settlers – which have been exposed by the powerful winds.
Recently, ARC Raiders has added several new map conditions to keep things interesting. The latest is called Cold Snap, which first appeared in December as a temporary challenge and was recently made a permanent feature. Before that, the Bird City condition was introduced, bringing unique obstacles and rewards due to a large increase in the bird population around Buried City.
Nexon, the company behind Embark Studios, recently announced that ARC Raiders has been very successful. In its latest financial report, Nexon stated that over 14 million copies of the game have been sold, helping the company achieve record-high revenue that surpassed their projections. The game also reached nearly one million players at the same time in January, across all platforms.
You can play ARC Raiders on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game’s design director recently shared details about how the matchmaking works.
