Things aren’t looking good for the X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday, and it’s possible Jean Grey and the team haven’t survived. While Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops do appear in the latest trailer, confirming they’re still alive, the massive destruction around them and the absence of other important characters suggest some mutants may have perished.
The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday begins with a conversation between Professor X and Magneto inside the X-Mansion, which appears to be in chaos and covered in dust. The trailer then shows Cyclops using his powerful optic blast, with a glimpse of a massive figure looming in the distance.
Cyclops’ Sentinels Scene Teases That The Other X-Men Could Have Died

The trailer for Doomsday shows Cyclops firing his optic blasts while appearing to be in intense pain, almost as if he’s screaming. He doesn’t seem to be aiming at a particular enemy, suggesting he’s suffering from a deep personal loss. Given his history, the most likely tragedy would be the death of Jean Grey.
The scene showing Cyclops hints that Jean might die. He’s surrounded by Sentinels – robots famous for destroying X-Men – and it’s likely those are Sentinel legs behind him, suggesting a dangerous situation.
Although several other X-Men characters are confirmed to be in Avengers: Doomsday, Jean Grey’s appearance hasn’t been officially announced. This has led fans to believe she might die early in the film, potentially without it being shown on screen. This is disappointing, as Jean is a fan favorite from the original X-Men team, and her death would likely have a significant impact on the other mutant characters.
Jean Grey wasn’t the only X-Man at risk in this moment. Other important characters, like Rogue and Iceman, haven’t been confirmed to be in the next installment, leaving the possibility open for their deaths as well. Essentially, if something can defeat Jean Grey, it could easily defeat any other mutant.
Right now, all of this is just guesswork based on who’s been cast and what we’ve seen in the trailer. Chris Evans showing up in the teaser proves they’re still keeping some actor appearances secret, and that might be true for Famke Janssen as well. Interestingly, the plot of Doomsday actually provides a logical reason for Jean Grey’s death.
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday appears to heavily focus on themes of family, particularly parenthood. Hints in the promotional material suggest storylines centered around Steve Rogers becoming a father, Thor’s relationships, and Reed and Sue Richards protecting their son, Franklin, from Doctor Doom. Adding to this, the New Avengers team is led by Red Guardian and Yelena, who have a father-daughter dynamic.
New versions of the X-Men, such as X-Men ’97, are giving a lot of attention to the child of Scott Summers and Jean Grey, Nathan Summers. Traditionally, Nathan grows up to become Cable, but the Doomsday storyline might alter that. It could lead to both Nathan and Jean dying during the attack on the X-Mansion. This would create a compelling contrast: Cyclops has already experienced the loss of a child, while the other heroes are fighting to prevent the same fate.
Every X-Men We Know Is Alive In Avengers: Doomsday

While many X-Men characters might not survive the upcoming events, the initial cast list confirms that some will. The recent reveal of actors featured in Avengers: Doomsday suggests that several X-Men beyond the well-known Professor X, Magneto, and Cyclops will be included.
Kelsey Grammer is reprising his role as Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, in the upcoming movie Doomsday. It’s unclear whether this version of Beast is the one from the original X-Men films, the one who appeared at the end of The Marvels, or if they are the same character. Alan Cumming will also be back as Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler, in the film.
Channing Tatum will reprise his role as Gambit, but this version is from the ‘Void’ as seen in Deadpool & Wolverine, and isn’t the same Gambit played by Taylor Kitsch in the older X-Men movies. While many expect to see Deadpool and Wolverine, there’s currently no confirmation about what will happen with Jean Grey’s character.
