Are the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion in Wicked? Full spoilers and roles explained

As a cinephile with a soft spot for classic films and a penchant for delving into their intricate backstories, I must say that Wicked: Part One has truly captivated me with its innovative approach to reimagining beloved characters from The Wizard of Oz.

*Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Wicked.*

In a fresh retelling, Wicked: Part One has arrived, offering a new perspective on the magical realm from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, delving into the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West, who becomes the primary adversary in that tale.

Although the movie, a version of the Tony Award-winning musical Wicked from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, mainly focuses on Elphaba’s (Cynthia Evero) past as a marginalized magic student, it also delves into various background stories from the world of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. These include the tales of the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, who assist Dorothy in defeating the witch in the 1939 movie.

These figures are present in “Wicked Part: One,” a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” though they may not conform to your usual expectations.

Before unveiling the genuine personas of the characters in Wicked: Part Two, set within the occurrences of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, here’s what you should be aware of regarding these intriguing figures.

Be warned though: spoilers follow.

In the musical prequel “Wicked: Part One,” it’s possible that the future Tin Woodman, a character from The Wizard of Oz, makes an appearance, although his identity may not be immediately recognizable to viewers.

He’s Ethan Slater, portraying Boq the Woodsman, who is a shy student at Shiz University alongside Elphaba and Glinda. His romantic feelings for both of them, particularly Nessarose, his love interest and sister to Elphaba, form a complex love triangle.

Upon learning that Boq had invited her to Fiyero’s gathering merely due to his affection for Glinda, Nessarose decides to use a charm from Elphaba’s grimoire to induce love towards herself in Boq instead.

It doesn’t quite go to plan, however, and ends up causing his heart to shrink and disappear.

Elphaba manages to save his life, but transforms him into the Tin Man in the process.

In Wicked: Part One, the individual who eventually transforms into the Scarecrow, as seen in The Wizard of Oz, is introduced. This character is none other than Elphaba’s romantic interest, Fiyero Tigelaar, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey.

In the sequel of “Wicked,” Fiyero recognizes that Elphaba is being unfairly blamed by the Wizard and joins her escape. He successfully keeps the Wizard’s guards from arresting her, however, he himself finds himself in a perilous situation during this confrontation.

Elphaba ends up casting a spell to save his life, but accidentally transforms him into the scarecrow.

In the musical “Wicked: Part One,” the Cowardly Lion, who later becomes a fearsome figure in “The Wizard of Oz,” is portrayed as a small cub that Elphaba and Fiyero free from captivity in their school, Shiz University, after it had been kept in a cage for display.

After being freed from captivity by Elphaba, the lion meets Dorothy and the Tin Man.
