Ariana DeBose Mourns Death of Mom After 3-Year Ovarian Cancer Battle

Ariana DeBose is mourning an enormous loss.

The actress who played a prominent role in West Side Story announced that her mom, Gina DeBose, passed away on August 17 at the age of 57 following complications from ovarian cancer. She expressed immense pride over her mother’s courageous three-year fight against the illness.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on August 19th, Ariana expressed that she considered the person as her dearest friend, most ardent supporter, and sternest critic. This individual accompanied her to all significant professional and personal events, and she cherished this role.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must acknowledge and express my deep appreciation to my incredible mother. Growing up, it’s been just the two of us – a testament to her tireless efforts and devotion as a single parent. She’s not only been a guiding light throughout my life but also an unwavering pillar of strength and love. I’m truly grateful for all she’s done.

She battled tirelessly to ensure I had a prosperous life, quality education, and every possible chance in the world,” she went on. “I’d never have reached my current position without her.

Additionally, Ariana emphasized the 30-year career of her mother as a dedicated public school teacher, stating that enlightening future generations was her mother’s “driving passion.

The Oscar-winning individual was admired and held in high esteem not only by her colleagues but also by her students. Her passing will undoubtedly be felt profoundly within her community, as she had become a beloved local figure. She was an imposing influence, much like a titan.

Ariana added, “My greatest and most proud achievement will always be to have made her proud.”

At the 2022 Oscars, the actress mentioned her strong relationship with her mother while accepting her Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the Broadway musical “West Side Story”. She made history by becoming both the first Afro Latina and the first openly queer woman of color to win an Academy Award in any acting category.
