ARK: Survival Ascended’s Legacy of Santiago Will Allow Studio to Test Features Meant for ARK 2

Developer Studio Wildcard previously announced they’re aiming to release ARK 2 around 2028. They also stated that features from the upcoming Legacy of Santiago expansion for ARK: Survival Ascended will give players a preview of what’s to come in the sequel. Studio co-founder Jeremy Stieglitz recently shared more about these plans in an interview with WCCFTech.

Jeremy Stieglitz, who handles creative and development leadership at Studio Wildcard, shared that the team is looking for player input on upcoming features in the Legacy of Santiago update. He explained, as he has before, that this feedback is valuable because it helps the studio minimize risks as they develop ARK 2.

We’re integrating many of the technologies we created for ARK 2 into Legacy of Santiago so we can get player feedback and test them thoroughly. It’s less risky to introduce new features in an expansion pack – if one doesn’t work out, you can move on. But a failed new game could be devastating. Legacy of Santiago lets us see how things like the updated combat system perform with real players over an extended period.

Just last month, Stieglitz discussed upcoming features for ARK: Survival Ascended, specifically those planned for the Legacy of Santiago expansion, which is scheduled to release in the fourth quarter of 2027. He explained that while Legacy of Santiago won’t focus on the story-driven content expected in ARK 2, it will introduce things like a challenging, Soulslike combat system for close-up fighting. He also suggested that if players enjoy these new systems, the main appeal of ARK 2* might become its detailed world and compelling story.

I think it mostly depends on the gameplay itself. Legacy of Santiago will be a chance for us to try out new combat features we’re planning for ARK 2, like combat inspired by Souls-like games and more focused melee fighting. However, Legacy of Santiago won’t have the extensive story and world-building we envision for ARK 2. If these combat mechanics work well in Legacy of Santiago, then the main appeal of ARK 2 could be its large, self-contained story campaign.

Stieglitz also discussed what Studio Wildcard learned when they shifted focus from ARK: Survival Evolved to ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2. He explained that players of Survival Evolved were upset because they wanted continued updates to the original game and weren’t prepared to switch to a new title.

We learned a big lesson with ARK: Survival Evolved – you shouldn’t stop supporting a game until your players are ready for you to. Honestly, we just abruptly stopped updating it, thinking we were done. But players were pretty upset because they still wanted more content and weren’t finished with the game yet. It really showed us we need to listen to what our community wants before calling it quits.
