It appears that Arkane Studios is moving forward smoothly in the development of Marvel’s Blade, as suggested by their recent financial report. In this statement, they revealed that a yet-to-be-named AAA game had started production at the end of 2024, following the completion of prototype validation. This suggests that the project has transitioned from its pre-production phase.
In the financial report for the previous year, Arkane Studios mentioned that they are still engaged in game development specifically for the ZeniMax/Microsoft group. As per a translation via Google, it was also stated that towards the end of 2024, the production phase of their AAA project began after successful prototype validation.
Although the specific title isn’t mentioned in the document, the timing and the ongoing work by Arkane Studios on Marvel’s Blade (without any other announced projects) suggests a possible delay. The fact that the game entered its main production phase at the end of 2024 hints that it might be progressing towards the speculated 2027 release window.
It’s possible that the planned release date for Marvel’s Blade may have shifted, considering that the initial speculation about its launch in 2027 was made back in 2023. As reported by GiantBomb’s Jeff Grub then, they were anticipating a store and digital release of this game in 2027, which appears to be their target year for the project.
The development timeline of the game experienced several adjustments following the closure of Arkane Austin, one of the studios under the Arkane umbrella, which occurred at the beginning of last year. After this closure, Dinga Bikaba, director of Marvel’s Blade and Deathloop, publicly expressed his views on Microsoft’s choice to shut down Arkane Austin, as well as other studios like Tango Gameworks.
As a gamer, I’m compelled to express my disappointment: This game is truly disheartening. To any executive who might be reading this, please remember that the gaming industry is not just about profits; it’s an essential part of our culture. So, consider this a gentle nudge to prioritize your developers and artists. They are the heart of your business, and they create the value that fuels your success.
Avoid trapping us in risky gold rush schemes, don’t misrepresent us to cover up errors or oversights, and please refrain from creating cutthroat work environments. We take pride in making a quality game when things are going well, so we ask that you inspire us during challenging times as well. We believe in your ability to do this because we have seen it before. Unfortunately, strong teams are disbanding once more, and it feels like a betrayal.
Back in December 2023, it was officially confirmed that Marvel’s Blade would be released. The game is planned as a solo action-adventure with mature content, featuring plenty of intense action and, given its superhero character, a good deal of violence. Differing from Arkane Studios’ typical projects, this game will employ a third-person camera view instead of the first-person perspective usually used by the studio.
The group responsible for creating Marvel’s Blade, specifically Arkane Lyon, have a history of developing games such as Deathloop and Dishonored 2 in the past.
