In 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in the action classic Predator, directed by John McTiernan. He played Dutch Schaefer, the leader of an elite military team sent to Central America on a hostage rescue mission. The team quickly discovered they weren’t facing human enemies, but a dangerous alien hunter, turning them into the prey. The film featured a strong supporting cast including Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Shane Black, and Jesse Ventura, and became a huge success, launching a long-running series. Despite the film’s popularity, Schwarzenegger never reprised his role in any of the sequels – until now, it seems.
Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, that he’s in talks to return for another Predator movie. He mentioned the director, Dan Trachtenberg, is doing a great job with the franchise, and that the studio, FOX, is interested in working with him again. Apparently, they’ve ‘rediscovered’ his potential.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Teases Several Projects

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently shared that the studio has approached him about returning to the Predator franchise, and he’s even received a script for Commando 2. While he’s 78, and his days of leading action films might be limited, he envisions potentially taking on a mentor-like role in future installments, passing the baton to a new star. Commando, released in 1985, featured Schwarzenegger as John Matrix, a retired Special Forces colonel seeking revenge on those who killed his former unit. Though someone like Sylvester Stallone continues to take on action roles, a similar comeback for Schwarzenegger isn’t a certainty.
Bringing Arnold Schwarzenegger back to the Predator series needs to be handled carefully. Putting him in a direct fight with a Predator would diminish the monsters’ power. Instead, he’d be more effective as a strategist, using his experience to guide someone else in the battle. Some also argue he’s no longer necessary, as the Predator franchise has thrived without him. It’s established itself and doesn’t rely on his presence anymore.
Despite being a great film, Predator: Badlands earned only $91 million domestically, which is likely a letdown. Perhaps bringing Arnold Schwarzenegger back – while continuing the strong storytelling of the recent films – could attract viewers who haven’t seen them yet. It’s good timing, as Schwarzenegger is also returning for a new Conan movie directed by Christopher McQuarrie, suggesting a promising future for this iconic 1980s star.
