Arnold Schwarzenegger’s $261M Sci-Fi Thriller Wins New Streaming Resurgence After Becoming Infamous Box Office Bomb

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s franchise-stalling sci-fi action movie has been resurrected.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is known for many memorable roles, but The Terminator is likely his most famous. He played the character in all five Terminator movies, including a 2019 installment that unfortunately didn’t do well at the box office.

Despite a disappointing initial release seven years ago, Terminator: Dark Fate is now finding an audience on streaming. It’s currently the fifth most popular movie on Paramount+ in the U.S., outperforming films like Paw Patrol: Super Charged, Top Gun: Maverick, Big Jake, and The Running Man in the daily rankings.

The latest Terminator film is performing surprisingly poorly, currently ranking below several family-friendly movies and even a horror film. Topping the daily charts is Primate (2025), followed by The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), Paw Patrol: Rescue Wheels (2024), and The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for SquarePants (2025).

As a fan, it’s really disappointing to hear that Dark Fate didn’t do as well as hoped at the box office. It cost around $196 million to make, but only brought in $261 million worldwide. Considering how movies need to basically double their production costs to break even, it looks like it needed to make closer to $490 million to actually be profitable. It’s a shame, because I really enjoyed it!

Tim Miller directs the latest Terminator movie, bringing back Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800 and Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. They team up to protect a young woman whose fate is tied to the future of humankind from a powerful, shape-shifting cyborg. The film also stars Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna, and was produced by the original Terminator creator, James Cameron.

While Dark Fate received mostly positive reviews (with a 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes), it didn’t perform well enough at the box office to justify continuing the Terminator films. No new movies have been made since 2019, though an animated series called Terminator Zero aired for one season in 2024.

James Cameron recently announced he’s writing a script for a seventh Terminator movie. While still in the early stages of development, the film will tell a completely original story, moving away from familiar elements like the T-800 character, Sarah Connor, and other established symbols of the franchise.

With fans wondering what’s next for the Terminator series, the 2019 film Terminator: Dark Fate is gaining popularity again, likely because it wraps up the stories of the franchise’s two most famous characters. While the future of the series is uncertain, many are revisiting this film, which appears to be the last installment featuring those iconic characters.
