Arrow Created One of the Best Original DC Characters, And We Need More Of Them

In the realm of comic book adaptations, writers often find themselves navigating a delicate balance between upholding established character traits and introducing creative changes. This is both advantageous and difficult due to the rich history behind each character. However, the Arrowverse chose to march to the rhythm of its own tune, altering elements as it saw fit. One of its earliest significant choices was to transform Oliver Queen from Arrow‘s comic book version into a more Batman-esque figure – a vengeful vigilante with no hesitation in causing harm to others. Moreover, the show introduced an original team member who left a lasting impression.

Initially in the series Arrow, Oliver Queen encounters John Diggle, his chauffeur and protector. At first, their bond is strained due to Oliver’s inclination towards solitary work, but as the seasons progress, they grow more connected. By the culmination of the Arrowverse, Diggle’s significance becomes so profound that he merits another opportunity in live-action portrayals.

John Diggle Makes the Most of His Opportunity in the Arrowverse

As a veteran, Diggle empathizes with Oliver’s mission to improve Star City. He gradually gets involved, filling in for his superior when he goes missing and providing counsel. However, the villains on Arrow become increasingly formidable, leading Diggle to participate more actively in the field. Additionally, he leverages his ties with A.R.G.U.S. to bring the Suicide Squad into play. This move proves beneficial as Deathstroke threatens to control the city during Season 2. Despite facing numerous challenges, Diggle’s unyielding spirit underscores why he is one of the most compelling original DC characters.

One of Diggle’s most challenging times occurs when he assumes the role of Green Arrow from Oliver. However, his physical condition isn’t ideal, leading him to depend on a drug that Ricardo Diaz is distributing illegally. Oliver becomes aware of this predicament and confronts him. Their interaction escalates into a fierce argument, with both friends exchanging harsh words. Fortunately, they manage to reconcile quickly, and their partnership proves to be the Arrowverse’s strongest team, defeating any villain they encounter. Regrettably, during “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” Oliver succumbs to the Anti-Monitor, leaving Diggle devastated.

Following Oliver’s demise, John Diggle grapples with his sense of self, particularly when he encounters a radiant green artifact reminiscent of a Green Lantern ring. He declines the Guardians of the Universe’s invitation to embody a cosmic champion, which is somewhat disappointing. Yet, James Gunn’s DC Universe is gearing up for launch, and there’s undeniably space for a character as virtuous as Diggle among the crew.

The DCU Could Use a Hero Like John Diggle

In the Arrowverse, it was often hinted that Diggle was their interpretation of the character John Stewart. This is evident through his last name (Stewart) and military background, which mirrors Green Lantern’s characteristics. However, the DC Universe has its own John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre in HBO Max’s Lanterns. Instead of being confined to a green lantern role, Diggle could take on an existing vigilante identity within the DCU, utilizing his helmet and providing aid to those in distress.

As a die-hard fan of the DC Universe, I’ve always been intrigued by A.R.G.U.S., the enigmatic organization that played a crucial role in Peacemaker, especially with its tumultuous end in Season 1. Given my extensive background in covert operations and mingling with unsavory characters, I could step in to help restore A.R.G.U.S.’s tarnished reputation, perhaps even taking the helm as director.

However, if Gunn and the team are looking for a different direction, they might consider the concept from the Arrowverse for my character, Diggle. In the proposed spinoff Justice U, I was envisioned to recruit young metahumans and guide them towards embracing their heroic potential. So, why not let me run a hero school within the DCU? After all, I’ve given so much to the brand on the small screen that it seems only fitting.
