After 28 years, Todd McFarlane’s popular comic book character, Spawn, has received a stunning 4K restoration for both the theatrical and director’s cut versions of the film. Arrow Video went back to the original film negatives to create this impressive upgrade, and they also reunited much of the original cast and crew to create a wealth of special features – a particularly strong offering, even for a company known for high-quality releases.
As a huge Spawn fan, I was so excited when Arrow released their limited edition 4K set on October 7th! You can get your own copy here. What’s awesome is it includes both versions of the movie, each with incredible Dolby Vision (and it’s compatible with HDR10 too!) and a really immersive DTS-HD 5.1 surround sound track. The packaging is cool too – you get reversible artwork so you can choose your favorite cover, and there’s a collector’s booklet with new writing about the film. They even threw in a reversible poster! It’s a fantastic set for any fan.
This release is clearly the result of a lot of hard work and passion from the team at Arrow, who clearly care deeply about *Spawn*. The visual quality is surprisingly excellent, especially considering how dark much of the film is. Focusing solely on the presentation, this restoration brings a vibrant life to *Spawn* that I didn’t anticipate.

While the restoration itself is excellent, the highlight of this release is the wealth of special features on the first disc. Arrow Video consistently adds new content to its releases, but this edition is particularly impressive because it includes so much original material with the cast and crew. Unlike some Arrow releases that focus heavily on film historians and writers, the features on *Spawn* primarily showcase the people who actually made the movie.
A highlight of the extras is a new interview called “Hell’s Perfect Son” with Michael Jai White. He honestly discusses the film’s production, explaining some of the choices that viewers found confusing. The interview really clarifies the filmmakers’ original vision for the movie, while still showing White’s appreciation for the final product.
The special features also include interviews with actors Melinda Clarke and D.B. Sweeney, music supervisor Happy Walters, editor Michael Knue, and makeup/special effects artists Howard Berger and Greg Nicotero – I highly recommend checking out the interview with Berger and Nicotero!
The biggest problem with this release isn’t the presentation, it’s the movie *Spawn* itself. Most people already know *Spawn* isn’t very good – and that’s being kind. While there are some good parts, like the creature effects and the acting from Martin Sheen and John Leguizamo, the movie as a whole just doesn’t work. If you’re hoping it’s aged well, unfortunately, it hasn’t. It remains a disappointing adaptation of the Image Comics series.
Similar to the 4K restoration of *Deep Blue Sea*, Arrow’s work on *Spawn* makes the film look fantastic, which unfortunately highlights how bad some of the computer effects are – they were pretty rough even for their time. While the picture and sound quality are both excellent, they can’t save a script that doesn’t quite align with the director’s vision.
While *Spawn* isn’t a great film, every movie deserves its fans – I’m even a lone admirer of *I, Frankenstein* myself! There’s a dedicated following for *Spawn*, and I respect that. If you’re a fan, this 4K release is a must-buy. It’s the best the movie has ever looked, and the disc includes more behind-the-scenes information than most physical releases.
Even with great picture quality and lots of extra features, if you didn’t enjoy the *Spawn* movie to begin with, this disc won’t change your mind.
