It’s incredibly satisfying to see a beloved childhood movie look better than ever, and that’s exactly what Arrow Video’s 4K release of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy delivers. Many classic films are being restored and re-released in 4K these days, but this one generated a lot of excitement. The challenge wasn’t just about improving the original quality, but also honoring the deep affection people have for these fun and sometimes goofy ’90s Turtles. Thankfully, Arrow exceeded expectations, creating a 4K trilogy that’s everything fans hoped for.
Arrow recently released the TMNT box set on both 4K and Blu-ray. This limited edition collection features all three movies, beautifully restored, and includes a ton of fun extras. You’ll get reversible posters for each film, collectible items like business cards and pizza menus, and brand new trading cards of the main characters. While the packaging is great and the extras are a nice touch, the highlight of the set is the quality of the films themselves, especially the first movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 1990.

The first TMNT movie was restored using the original film, resulting in the highest possible picture quality. The restorations of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III used older copies, so the picture isn’t quite as sharp. The 1990 film generally looks better than the sequels, but that’s also because it originally had a higher quality visual style. After the first TMNT, the series shifted towards being more appealing to younger children, with more slapstick comedy and brighter colors.
You’ll definitely see a visual improvement between the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles disc and the rest, which is normal. The picture quality is better, and the film itself looks great. The turtles’ green suits really stand out against the dirty, gritty New York City setting. The detail in the suit fabric is so well-captured that it actually enhances the experience, reminding us how much we appreciate practical costumes and effects – and how much of a difference they can make when creating memorable characters.

The special features in this collection are just as remarkable as the films themselves. Arrow didn’t just include commentary from historians and critics; they brought back many of the people who actually made the original TMNT movies for new interviews and insights, giving fans a fantastic look behind the scenes and at the lasting impact of these beloved films.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about the new bonus content for the 1990 film! They’ve got a commentary track with the director, Steve Barron, which is awesome. Plus, there’s a cool featurette with interviews from the actors who played the Turtles, both in the suits and doing the voices. And get this – they finally sat down for a full interview with Judith Hoag, the original April O’Neil! Fans have been wondering what happened to her for years, so that’s a big deal.
This new release from Arrow is a fantastic collection for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans. While the later movies don’t quite live up to the original – and many are hoping for a separate 4K version of the first film – it’s clear a lot of care went into creating this set, especially for those who love the original movies. Plus, it’s available at a great price, making it essential for any true TMNT enthusiast.
